In honour of women’s month, we’re taking a look at the artists whose work explores the feminine body in all its representations.
There still exists an often misunderstood socio-political tension when it comes to visibility for female artists. It is very much about design and art but there is meaning beyond aesthetic practices, more significantly for women of colour in the field.
With unique techniques and an effortless mastering of their various mediums, these women educate and create a relatable awareness about issues that affect women both in South Africa and the globe, transcending words and culture through powerful visual motifs.
My practice is Appearance, translated from the Zulu word Ukuvela. An understanding of someone existence contextualized by a particular historic or futuristic narrative. Thus My Appearance is a demand from the present to engage with the past and the future. Appearance as a practice comes from a common ancestral / spiritual presence amongst the Nguni people of Southern Africa, and is understood as plural existence. That in one body, exist more than one person. I have a plural existence with Khanyisile Mbongwa, and it for this reason amongst others that I am not performing nor am I a performance artist. #WhatATimeToBeBlack #WhatATimeToBeWomxn #WhatATimeToBeQueer

Lungiswa Gqunta (South Africa) will also be joining us as an artist in residence from July 2nd until September 17th! -- Her practice considers the hidden structures of exclusion and oppression that continue to perpetuate the legacy of colonialism and how this is manifested in different forms of violence.
