Resort wear is a big trend this summer and the inspiration of our main #DecemberIssue shoot, ‘Ocean Colour Scene’.

The ELLE fashion team takes a look at their favourite 2014 resort collections:

Stella McCartney

Madonna, Kate Bosworth and Liv Tyler joined a throng of fashion editors under a packed marquee in rain-drenched New York in support of McCartney. The English-style garden party showcased her 2014 Resort Collection, which was more of a capsule wardrobe than the traditional vacation-targeted shows. For day, print and colour were natural and light-hearted. We saw embellished snake-print in variations of mustard and chocolate, worn with florals in frosted pink and lemon yellow. Stella’s waistlines are going lower – whether on trouser suits, teeny tiny shorts or 1920s style dresses.

The Chloé Resort Collection for 2014 is an ode to easy-to-wear Parisian chic, with relaxed proportions and light textures. Chloé designer Clare Waight Keller showed some beautiful investment separates like trenches and light lace and silk shifts. We also saw this season’s masculine, elongated sleeveless jacket; simple sweatshirts and pants in every relaxed proportion imaginable. Our favourites are the pink moto inspired jacket and the moments where looks were worn with flats, especially the Birkenstock-like gold-plated sandals.

Modern femininity reigned supreme at Marni's Resort 2014 showing. Clothing and accessories were very minimal with boxy jackets and a simple pinafore cover-up worn over a nude playsuit. The structural brilliance of Consuelo Castiglioni's cuts comes into play with deep necklines that strategically reveal little flesh. The simple, demure touch of a black bow, tied at the waist brought back innocent glamour.

Gucci Resort 2014 is about the comfort and ease of luxury sportswear. Nothing about the silhouette is too garish or sexy. Hemlines are just above the knee, necklines don’t stray too low and even when styles are drawn in at the waist there is still breathing room. A futuristic, almost Ziggy Stardust luxe feel comes into play with glinting metallic fabric; shimmery lurex, crystal embroidery, sequins and holographic accessories mixed with heavy gauge knits and a suede trench.
