Epsom Salts Are Back And They're The Spa-Worthy Secret To To Banishing Your Insomnia

Not exactly glam, but they really do work.

Epsom salts. They probably conjure up images of your gran's bathroom shelf or a painful post-run soak rather an indulgent, bubble bath with a glass of fizz.

But hear us out, because they're currently gaining traction as the key to wellbeing, with a perfect night's sleep, something a huge 67% of us say we don't actually get enough of, topping the list of epsom salt benefits.

Still not convinced? Here's why Epsom salts deserve a spot in your bedtime beauty routine.

What Are Epsom Salts?

Thanks to Pinterest and Instagram - not to mention the fact that we're generally a really stressed out nation - Epsom salts have made it back into our bedtime beauty repertoire, and we're so into it - but what exactly are they?

Epsom salts are basically fine crystals of magnesium sulphate, which, when added to water, dissolve into two separate components. According to experts, the magnesium in particular has brilliant relaxation benefits, so combine those with their luxuriously silky feel and an aromatherapy experience and you're on the right road to zen.

How Will Epsom Salts Help Me Sleep?

Health and wellness experts argue that the magnesium in dissolved Epsom salts can effectively penetrate the skin, and according to Dr. Bharti Rajput, founder of Sole Body Soul, ease stiff, weary muscles, alleviating pain and aiding relaxation. And that translates into a better night's sleep.

A warm bath in general helps, too. Fewer of us are making time for a soak, opting instead for a speedy shower, but the former could be key to self care. In fact, studies have shown that increasing our body temperature before bed can help us fall asleep faster and deeper.

To maximise your chances of a better snooze, pick Epsom salts supplemented with essential oils. Wellness expert, Beata Aleksandrowicz, says that notes of vanilla, rose, jasmine and lavender in particular are great at soothing the senses before bed.

Are There Any Other Benefits Of Epsom Salts?

Heaps of them, so it looks like your gran might have been right after all. Not only can they deliver you into a peaceful sleep, but they can solve all manner of skin and hair bugbears, too.

1) Epsom Salts Make For An Effective Natural Exfoliator

Epsom salts are much finer than your typical chunky, crystal-esque bath salts, which makes them a much gentler exfoliator than some other scrubs. Massage them onto dry skin before your bath or shower to slough off dead skin cells. Bacne and ingrown hairs, be gone.

2) Epsom Salts Can Bring Down Inflammation

A regular Epsom salt bath is said to kick-start better blood circulation, bringing down inflammation, swelling and easing away pain - perfect post-barrecore or spin.

3) Epsom Salts Can Help Remove Product Buildup In Your Hair

A scalp scrub should be a staple in everyone's haircare arsenal, because unobstructed hair follicles = stronger, bouncier lengths, and according to the experts, magnesium sulfate is brilliant at absorbing excess oil.
