Emma Watson might have just answered the question theorists and activists have been trying to define for years. What is a feminist?
The actress and activist, who is currently leading the struggle for gender equality, hosted a live Q&A at the Facebook offices yesterday as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations.
After her iconic United Nations speech in September, the star has received world-wide support for her HeforShe campaign.
During the live stream Watson continued to highlight the need for men to be involved in the movement. She spoke particularly about the negative connotation of the word ‘feminist’ while denouncing the belief that it’s only a women’s word.
‘It’s an equality club, for both genders. It’s about men coming in support of women and women coming in support of men.’
She then addressed the chivalry vs sexism question that arises when a man holds the door open for a woman. ‘Isn’t that just polite?’ she asked. ‘I think the key is, would you then mind if I open the door for you?’
‘If you stand for equality, you’re a feminist. Sorry to tell you. You’re a feminist. That’s it!’
