On page 94 of our October summer issue, fashion director Poppy Evans shot the winners of our reader style competition. Hundreds of ELLE readers put up their hands to be featured in our first reader style story ever and we chose five fabulous ELLE readers. The lucky fish made it into our fashion closet and then it was lights, camera, action! Here’s what went on behind the lens:

Introducing the lovely Mody Khabele, Nothile Khumalo, Anesu Mutyorauta, Bonolo Mashilo and Sithembile Yolanda Mabaso.

‘We chose our five finalists based not only on their unique sense of style, but their thinking behind it as well.’ – Poppy Evans

The fashion selection from local retailers and amazing pieces from local designers!

We asked Poppy to share the details of shoot day here:

Tell us about the styling. Was this a challenge?

‘All of the finalists selected their own outfits. It was, however, quite a challenge to get to a point where everyone was happy with their look. All of the garments we brought to the shoot, literally hundreds, were different sizes, styles, brands and designers. It was interesting to see who was drawn to what. I was also really impressed that nobody went straight for designer or luxury items for the sake of it – another reason why our finalists deserved to win. They really do understand the meaning of a style democracy.’

Make-up artist Tiffany Wilson painted the lovely faces of our winners. We love that the make-up was natural and fresh with pops of colour and didn’t take attention away from the styling. The subtle make-up allowed the personalities to shine through.

One of ELLE’s favourite hairstylists, Saadique Ryklief, was the man behind the amazing hair style. Each look brought out the personality of each of our winners.

Highlight of shoot day?

‘Every opportunity I get to meet our readers is an amazing experience – sometimes my job feels a little surreal. It’s easy to lose touch, and it’s spending time with women such as these that reminds me why I love working for ELLE. It makes it all worth it! On a less serious note, I also enjoyed watching them all blush while shouting: ‘JP is hot’ [Jean-Pierre Fourie is the photographer who shot this] into the camera!

‘We thought we would need the whole day, but they were all such naturals that we were finished by lunch time, so, instead of working, we ordered pizza and had a long lunch!’ – Poppy
