A 16-year-old girl in the Maldives was sentenced to a public flogging after she confessed under sharia law to having pre-marital sex, News24 reports. The teenager can now choose between eight months’ house arrest or being flogged with a cane when she turns 18.

Last year the UN put pressure on the Maldives to halt corporate punishment of women who have sex outside or before marriage.

Thandy on 9/6/2012: It is always shocking when stories like this come up in this day in age. And it is always the places that we who love to travel have on our lists. I hope the UN can do something urgently so this sentence is not actioned.
