With the controversy over young women who are too thin dominating the conversation about sites like Tumblr and Pinterest, it is refreshing to see a healthy young woman who is using her natural beauty to spread a positive message.
Scouted at the age of 16 while working in retail, Sunday Omony has broken the traditional modelling mould to build a successful career on the body and features she was born with. Originally from Kitgum, Uganda, Omony’s family fled the war-torn northern region due to conflict caused by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and settled in Canada where she is still based. Using her career as an example of a successful and healthy body image, Omony travels around North America promoting positive self-esteem for young girls. She has featured in editorials for publications across Europe and North America, including a spread in Italian Vogue.
The message being spread by plus-size models like Omony is an important one. She believes in diversity and encouraging girls to see their natural beauty despite the images they are constantly being shown in mainstream media.
We are truly inspired by Omony, who has leant her voice to numerous humanitarian causes and is especially focused on helping the youth from her home country. Through her work she hopes to foster a spirit of giving back among the youth of Uganda, and would also like to bring global attention to the plight of the refugees who are in the same situation she found herself in as a child.
