the_job_interview‘Dress for the job you want’ is the best tip for what to wear to a job interview. What you wear is the first impression people get about you – and first impressions do last. It’s important to look professional, but also show a bit of your personality. A minimalist trouser suit or a good dress are my two favorite pieces that I would chose for an interview. Nothing too flashy (no iridescence or glitter) keep it simple but very sophisticated. In our most recent round of ELLE fashion intern interviews, I remember one particular young lady stood out for me before she had even breathed a word. She wore a black tailored trouser suit with a classic white shirt. It was so simple, but was an impeccable fit. She was comfortable and it showed that though very considered, she wasn’t trying too hard. I’d recommend the leather vest from Eponymous (page 83) of the August issue as a modern alternative to a shirt. I’d wear it with a burgundy trouser suit. And on page 101, the feminine pussybow blouse from Zara is perfect to team with a cropped trouser or a pencil skirt.

the_dinner_dateDinner dates are probably the simplest way to show off your personality through clothes when you’re nervous. (Especially on your first date). The best way to ‘dress up’ for dinner is to always throw on a pair of heels – it’s non-negotiable! The it shoe to have at the moment is without a doubt a pair of glitter or metallic beauties, (like the ones on page 81 in the Denim: Red-Hot & Blue shoot). They would be great to pair with a printed trouser, dark denims, or even an umbrella skirt. Make sure to keep the sparkle on your feet and your cheeks and not on the rest of your clothes – it’s dinner, not a disco. And also remember that being seated at a dinner table detracts from your shoes for a while, so don’t ride on those completely, brighten up your look with a pop of colour for your top half and maybe skip on bright lip colour that won’t last the night.

the_weddingWeddings are tricky. Rule number one is where there’s a dress code; stick to it – remember this is somebody else’s big day. That said, try to avoid clichés. Florals and pastels are very predictable, as is lace, and I’m pretty sure I don’t have to tell you not to wear white. Also avoid dressing overly sexy – racy animal print and short sequined cocktail dresses are not usually appropriate. Metallics however, especially matte metallic are a great option, specifically because they can be worn from day into night.
Most weddings are happy occasions, so in this one instance I would not recommend wearing black, but greys and nudes are also great neutral colours to play with, and are very versatile. For evening weddings I think it’s important to make an effort – a beautiful prom dress, or anything with a flared fifties inspired shape is both glamorous and feminine. A tuxedo can also be very alluring, perhaps replace the shirt and bow tie with a lace or sheer blouse or even a lingerie inspired piece

Pippa J on 8/13/2012: great tips for the job interview, couldn't agree with you more...although I do prefer cream paired with black, rather than white....its less 'waitressy' :-)
