Junior Features Writer and Stylist, Jenna McArthur, chats to designer Tiaan Nagel for the scoop on his special, and incredibly stylish, wedding day.

How did you meet Joanette?
We met in high school, she sat behind me in Geography and I fell in love with her immediately. She was fun and super confident and we just hit it off as friends. We only got together in matric.

Where did you propose?
I was working on a project for Design Indaba this year in Cape Town, I asked her to fly down and spend a few days with me. We drove to Llandudno, drank some Moet, and I went down on one knee and asked her to marry me. Afterwards we went to Royale in Long Street for a burger and some more bubbly.

Where did you get married?
We got married on 30 October in a beautiful old house in Inanda, Jo’burg underneath a beautiful old tree. We had lunch on the patio with close friends and family with a few soppy speeches, then the evening turned into absolute fun.

You designed Joanette’s fairy tale dress, tell us about the inspiration behind this amazing design?
In this case I was ‘merely’ the dress maker. Joanette was very specific on the concept and the mood of the dress. She wanted something contemporary and beautiful with a hint of tradition. We concocted this dream-like skirt with roughly 30m of cream silk, cotton organza imported from Paris. It was soft and romantic but contemporary and modern. The sexy corset/bustier was beaded in Swarovski and encrusted on the little grey belt in the waist. It took me about three months to make but it was all worth it when I saw her walking towards me.

Where were her shoes from?
Pedro Garcia at Nina Roche – they were black satin shoes with deconstructed raw edges and some jet Swarovski components. Joanette’s a complete shoe-aholic, so it took several tries.

Tell us about your outfit?
I knew I couldn’t go traditional so I went to Karen from Lunar and explained to her what I wanted – something creased, and not tailored. I went for a dark brown/grey peg trouser and huge jacket that was boiled and shrunken, a bespoke check shirt and an amazing tie from Country Road and the most beautiful black leather Prada shoes from Joanette as a wedding gift.

Tell us about the food, flowers, music, cake and the photo booth?
We had a Sunday lunch feel with our friends and family, catered by the amazing Vicky Crease. Her food was absolutely sublime, from the canapés in the garden during the photos, to the actual dinner and the most amazing little desserts. The flowers were done by Collin from Atomic Orchid. The tables were dressed with Belgian linen and amazing silverware. The photo booth added a lighthearted touch; our friends were silly and just having fun.

What was the highlight of the day?
Seeing Joanette come down the garden path. She was the picture of sophistication and dreaminess.
