The much-anticipated film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel, Anna Karenina, has got both literary buffs and fashion nerds in a frenzy. The bookworms are eager to see how acclaimed director Joe Wright has re-imagined the novel which is said to be one of Tolstoy’s best works. The fashionistas, on the other hand, can’t wait to feast their eyes on the costumes and set designs of this period film.

Anna Karenina is one of the most legendary stories about forbidden love. Set in 19th-century Russia, the film stars Keira Knightley as a high-society married woman who falls in love with a young soldier named Count Vronsky (Aaron Johnson) and ends up being shunned by society.

The film adaptation, with its beautifully elaborate costumes, has also inspired Banana Republic’s latest collection. The retailor has even reeled in the film’s costume director Jacqueline Durran to design the range. It consists of 76 pieces, which include feminine dresses, lace blouses and military-inspired coats for women and topcoats and flannel suits for men.

In an interview with inStyle.com, Banana Republic’s creative director Simon Kneen said: ‘It’s really about taking key elements of that time period – sophisticated colour, fabrics, and beautiful detailing – and translating that into an updated wardrobe. Small touches such as lace and fur embellishments portray a classic sense of luxury without requiring a full look that may feel costumey. Even if incorporating vintage pieces, you shouldn’t don a full 19th-century look. Instead, mix and match with more modern pieces to keep it current.”

The collection will be in Banana Republic stores from today and Anna Karenina will be released in local cinemas on 1 February 2013.
