A painting of ELLE July 2013 cover star Tarina Patel has been sold on auction for a cool R85 000.
The painting went under the hammer last weekend at the Glamour Aid Charity Dinner and Art Auction in Cape Town’s glitzy Camps Bay. High society guests from all over the country attended including Tarina Patel herself, presenter Natalie Becker and actress Tammy-Anne Fortuin to name a few.
The colourful abstract oil painting is 150 x 120 cm in size and was painted by well-known South African artist Lionel Smit on a piece of Belgian linen. Bold strokes of electric blue, fire engine red and pinky hues show-off Tarina’s almond shaped eyes and high cheekbones. The work garnered the highest bid of the night, followed by Arno Carsten’s painting by Richard Scott at R 80 000 and Nelson Mandela’s painting by Chrys Mammous at R 65 000.
Artist Lionel Smit is best known for his contemporary portraiture work. At 31 he is considered one of the countries youngest investment artists and his work is currently exhibited in London, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Germany, India, Miami, Monaco and Sydney. Smit’s large-scale portrait of a Cape Malay woman was shown in London’s National Portrait Gallery and chosen as the ‘face’ of the BP Portrait Award 2013. One of his works was featured on the cover of a Christie’s auction catalogue in London – a huge highlight in his career so far.
We love the multi-colour palette of Lionel Smit and we love this vivid and carefree, paint-box depiction of Tarina Patel. Do you?
