We are very excited about summer – we mean it! Our November issue hit the shelves on Monday and put us in the perfect mood to kick off the season. It’s packed with swimwear, sunglasses (worn by you) and sandals plus our edit of the hottest pieces to buy now. What really gets us in the laid-back, holiday mood, though, is fashion editor Tarryn Oppels ‘Such A Perfect Day’ on page 64. Watch the behind-the-scenes video on ELLE TV here and you’ll be singing ‘we’re all going on a summer holiday’ (as we are) and getting ready for summer dressing, palm trees and picturesque sunsets, Ooh, and a cocktail or two.

Hit the play button and tell us if you love what you see!

I really love this ice cream shot. It embodies what summer’s all about, it’s playful, fun and has a sense of humour.

The focus with the styling was to steer away from anything trend-driven and simply celebrate summer. Because it is a lifestyle story, the looks weren’t overstyled. We used light, airy fabrics to make them fuss-free and easy to wear. I used refreshing white, hints of bright colour and tropical prints to take things in a resort direction, combining them with classic preppy pieces like Bermuda shorts, blazers, crisp white shirts and denim.

Sylvie and I were in agreement that the hair and make-up should be really natural and sun-kissed. She moisturised the model’s skin, blushed the cheeks, added volume to the lashes and texturised the hair to make it look sun-dried and wavy.

It was only fitting that the story should be shot outdoors in an urban setting and this led us to Kalk Bay as it has a good balance between land and sea with streets and buildings on the one side and the quaint harbour on the other.

Even though the sun was out, the famous Cape Town wind didn’t let up until right at the end of the shoot. We nearly lost a few hats and our model, Joyce’s, hair became untamable, but I was very happy and lucky that we actually had sunshine since it rained the day before and the day after.

We were busy changing the model (into the yellow dress and wide brimmed hat) and were about to shoot her against a few palm trees when Poppy came running, telling us to be quick because she’d found the perfect prop! It was a metallic green bakkie loaded with fruit and veg that was stationary right across the parking lot. The problem was that it was only standing still because of the stop and go roadworks in Kalk Bay. It was such a laugh getting the shot in traffic and seeing the driver lean over his friend in the passenger seat to witness everything.

Overall, it was a pleasant day out with a great crew and a big plate of fish and chips for lunch, in the perfect location!
