In our July issue, fashion editor Tarryn Oppel gives our favourite basic, the T-shirt, some serious street cred. Here’s a look behind the scenes on shoot day and Tarryn’s comments on the story.

Did you have a favourite moment during the day?

Watching hairstylist Fiona Gentry work her magic. It’s the first time I’ve worked with her and I look forward to doing it again.

 

Any challenges?

Shooting in a studio with a great crew leaves absolutely no room for challenges :)

Your top tip for giving a T-shirt that extra street cred?

The best way is to steer away from the comfort of your trusty jeans. Be more creative and dare to pair it with something printed or luxurious textures like velvet, and always make your T-shirt the hero by not over-accessorising.

Why did you choose Laura as your model?

Laura arrived in SA from New York and I knew immediately that I needed to work with her. She postponed her return flight to shoot for ELLE (so I love her for that already) and she has the most amazing hair ever!

 

Which look from the shoot is the one you covet?

I love the idea of a pencil skirt with a T-shirt and heels! Minus the parka and peak cap, I rocked that look this past weekend at a birthday bash!
