There are few things that can turn your mood around like being pampered. Whether it’s a full-body massage at your favourite spa or an express manicure, there is something about taking time out just for you that is essential for every girl. ELLE’s Sarah Koopman found hers at Sorbet:

I found the latest addition to time-saving luxury at the Dunkeld West Shopping Centre in Jo’burg – the Sorbet Drybar, a hairstyling-first in South Africa. Unlike other salons, the Drybar specialises in blowdrying and does nothing else.

The salon’s décor is everything we love about sorbet products and salons, with soft pastel colours and friendly staff to make you feel comfortable enough to put your feet up and be pampered. I was welcomed by Thandi, who says that since they opened about a month ago they have been inundated with bookings. We are on our feet all day and are fully booked. It is incredible how many women have been drawn to this new idea.

Before getting started, Thandi had a look at my hair and talked me through their blowdry menu. Drybar does eight different styles and covers everything from short pixie crops to weaves. If you’ve read ELLE’s October issue (page 118) you’ll know that I’m constantly in search of ways to add volume to my fine hair. So, the voluminous honeycomb style immediately appealed to me.

Once settled on a style, Thandi took me to have my hair washed. Each stylist is trained to use L’Oréal products that are best suited to each client’s hair. I love having my hair washed and I later found out that for just R50 extra, you can get a 10-minute scalp massage (definitely something to remember next time).

I was shown back to my chair, where I was offered everything from champers to a cappuccino. Thandi set to work and before I knew it I was set with a new hairstyle and a new friend – we made full use of the time I was in the chair and had a proper girl-to-girl chat.

I left the salon feeling like a new person. The express blowdries, Thandi said, are extremely popular. ‘We have mothers coming in for a quick blowdry during the day, ladies who want to spoil themselves before going out on a Saturday night and even businesswomen who want to have their hair done in the morning before a meeting.’

The salon offers a few other special treats, such as manicures and pedicures that you can have before or after you’ve had your hair done as well as special treatments if your hair needs a little extra care. For R140 per blowdry (regardless of the style) and in just 45 minutes, Sorbet Drybar is the perfect, quick pick-me-up and I can’t wait to go back.
