Solange-Knowles-For-Rimmel

Our girl Solange Knowles (yes, you’ll have to wait to see her in our November issue) is making waves as the It-girl of the moment. She’s also the face of Rimmel’s Lasting Finish 25 Hour Foundation and stars in Rimmel’s ad campaign for the foundation, showing off skin that looks beautifully radiant and naturally flawless. It goes without saying that the ELLE’s belles are huge fans of Miss Knowles and Rimmel, so when we heard that one of our favourite beauty brands had teamed up with the style icon and songbird, we couldn’t be more excited.

ELLE’s beauty editor Lynette Botha, (who was lucky enough to have a sneek preview of the product), gave Rimmel’s Lasting Finish 25 Hour Foundation her vote, saying: ‘I love its lightness. Even though it’s long-wearing, it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin or dry it out, like many long-lasting foundations do. It’s great for natural-looking coverage and fits perfectly into a busy lifestyle like mine – no reapplication is needed and it has you covered with an SPF of 20’.

Sound good? Rimmel’s latest foundation is going for R99.95 and will be available at Edgars, Clicks, Foschini, Dis-Chem, Pick n Pay, The Hub and selected pharmacies from November.

We also chatted to Solange and asked her how she keeps looking so fresh.

What’s your number one beauty tip?

Be healthy, be happy, be beautiful, and be wholeheartedly you!

What’s your secret to always looking so perfect?

My imperfections.

Would you ever leave the house without makeup?

I always do…

Favourite beauty product?

Tinted moisturiser.

Do you have a special beauty routine?

Yes! The classic Solange make-up routine is concealer just under the eyes and on blemishes, a wing-tipped liquid liner, mascara like Rimmel’s Lash Accelerator, a lip liner that matches my natural colour and a strong lip colour – a good one is Rimmel Lasting Finish in Firecracker. I can do all of this with my eyes closed in five minutes.

Favourite fragrance?

Good ol’ cocoa butter lotion.

How would you describe your make-up style?

It’s one with contradictions. Adventurous and bold yet natural and minimal. Moody? If you look at my videos and photo shoots, you’ll see I’ve worn anything from feather lashes to war paint. I believe that the face is a canvas and there are so many beautiful ways to express and play-up ourselves through make-up. But I’m also I’m a big campaigner for natural beauty. My day-to-day life doesn’t include make-up at all and I feel very beautiful like that too. That said, it makes the times when I do get dressed up and made up all the more exciting.

How do you feel about so many women looking up to you as a role model since you became the face of Rimmel?

I am very careful of taking on the role model tag. I am human and I am expected to have imperfections and make mistakes. However, if there are positive things I do that inspire or influence people I feel that I’ve really fulfilled my purpose as a human being. When I announced my role with Rimmel, I felt very proud to see such a positive response, especially since I am someone of colour, a single mom, an artist… and I didn’t have to compromise my views for it!

Do you have any icons?

My mother, Lauryn Hill, Grace Jones, Björk, Diana Ross.

What is your favourite Rimmel product?

The lipstick! I especially love the Moisture Renew range. There are some phenomenal nudes I’ve been wearing faithfully. My fave colour is Dreamy.

You have very different looks in Rimmel’s upcoming campaigns. Is there any one that you prefer and why?

The very natural one with the golden glow. I think it looks the most like me. When I say that, I mean physically and emotionally, the mood and the sensuality.
