Ethiopian supermodel, humanitarian and entrepreneur, Liya Kebede is our September 2016 cover star!
After spending over a decade taking the fashion world by storm, the philanthropic model has graced more covers, runways and campaigns than we can count.
In 2007 she started the Liya Kebede Foundation, after she was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the World Health Organization. The LKF focuses on ensuring safe motherhood in Africa by supporting leading organisations that work to reduce maternal and newborn deaths in Africa through advocacy, education, grantmaking and partnerships.
In the same year, she also founded clothing brand Lemlem, inspired from a trip to her home country Ethiopia where Kebede met traditional weavers who no longer had a market for their goods. “By employing traditional weavers, we’re trying to break their cycle of poverty, at the same time preserving the art of weaving while creating modern, casual, comfortable stuff that we really want to wear,” said Kebede.
The beautiful 38-year-old model and mother of two now stars on the cover of ELLE South Africa, shot exclusively by photographer extraordinaire, Marc Baptiste. See highlights from the shoot below.
