If you have seen ‘Into the Secret Garden’ on page 72 of our February issue, we have no doubt that you have, like us, fallen in love with painterly prints, blossoms and colours that make your heart sing.

Here are the behind-the-scenes pictures that show how fashion editor Asanda Sizani put the shoot together on the day, with commentary by Asanda:

This shoot was about romantic prints: blooming blossoms and painterly and vivid prints. We sourced a mix of designer and retail items – it was about finding new prints that are soft and romantic, and shooting them against printed backdrops to enhance the effect.

Make-up artist Algria Ferreira and hairstylist Jeanette Genis weaved their magic, as always, with a romantic up-do and a bare face with gently flushed cheeks and matte red lips.

On Shoot

We used printed fabrics from Hertex that matched or were as busy as clothes. I wanted the model to ‘melt’ into the prints. The hands you can see holding up the roll of fabric behind Alessandra of Ice belong to Daniel Geldenhuys, our intern.

Alessandra looked as if she had stepped back in time in a vintage floral headpiece and Carducci blazer.

Asanda At Work

We just had to use this printed Marianne Fassler maxi-skirt that we fell in love with at last year’s Africa Fashion Week.

When I saw this silk Paul Smith shirt with its butterfly print I immediately thought why not get a few live butterflies for the shot? We got in touch with Taryn who owns Blue Bottle Guesthouse and whose husband works at Butterfly World, and she graciously volunteered to supply us with a few of the fragile creatures. We didn’t know what to expect, as butterflies are very unpredictable but luckily most sat perched on Alessandra’s hair and arms for long enough to get the shot. And don’t worry, no butterflies were harmed in getting this shot; they are safely back at Butterfly World.

There was silence in the room and BlackBerrys and cameras were whipped out to capture Alessandra surrounded by butterflies.

 Senior fashion editor Poppy Evans and Daniel had to hide behind the fabric to hold Alessandra up as she leant against it.

Klûk CGDT kindly lent us a piece of the brocade their jacket is made from for this backdrop.

In a modern American Beauty moment, Alessandra lay on a bed of red (artificial) flowers. Asanda and fashion intern Heseré Gildenhuys threw flowers into the air and eventually the entire crew was roped in. Regarding the fashion, clashing prints are a big trend – don’t be afraid to wear head-to-toe prints this season.
