There’s no denying that every woman wants to look amazing for less and fashion assistant Tarryn Oppel shows us how in ‘Love To Love You Baby’ on page 80 of our February issue. And here’s a peek at the thinking and the styling behind the shoot as Tarryn styles the season with the romance of lace and sequins mixed with denim.

What’s the big idea?

Since our February issue is all about love and romance, it was clearly fitting to do a story that incorporated those elements. I had a little more freedom, though, and decided to make it slightly edgy by mixing opposites and playing with hard and soft – it’s my take on romance.

Highlight of the shoot?

Hands down, having our creative director Anton Sassenberg on set all day! It was great to have him approve each shot and to have his direction on the spot.

Tell us about the styling?

The two main fashion stories in the issue are both very sophisticated and feminine. Much as I love it, I wanted to take a different route by adding a few grungy pieces to a ‘romantic’ story with worker boots, leather and metallic. I made sure to make every look tough and pretty.

Hair and make-up?

I wanted a few waves and curls without having hair that’s too ‘done’ – just naturally pretty with smouldering eyes that have just a touch of smokiness. Basically my idea was the same as with the fashion: a mix of tough and pretty.

On Shoot Day

Any challenges on shoot day?

The biggest challenge was creating the backdrop, because it was done the day before! I bought metres and metres of fabric and cleaned out the fabric dye stock at Fabric City. I took everything to Langa, our fashion intern, and sewed two eight-metre sheets together. After 45 minutes of non-stop sewing, it was back to the ELLE Decoration office (which is in an old house and has a bath) where Heseré and Rusty, the other two fashion interns, helped me to dip-dye the fabric, which took about four hours. We hung it out to dry at the office and prayed that it would be dry by call time in the morning – success!

Action

Any funny moments?

I was a bit of a stressball that day, so I’m afraid not. But that’s not to say that it wasn’t a great shoot with an amazing crew!

Do you have a favourite shot and why?

I love the single shot of Jadyn, the model, in the black bandage skirt. Her stance in those boots and the few accessories are quite powerful yet her facial expression is so vulnerable – almost like she’s unaware of the shot – it’s just beautiful!

What advice do you have for getting this look?

The trick is to have a hint of tough with an overall pretty look, so it lies in your shoe choice, whether worker boots, solid wedges or sneakers. Otherwise pick one tough item like leather skinnies and wear it with something like a cropped floral T-shirt. The easiest way to pull it off is by pairing denim with a little sparkle – you can’t go wrong there!
