While designers such as Karl Lagerfeld (remember his Paris-Bombay-themed fashion show for Chanel?), and Christian Louboutin with his Bollywood-inspired spring/summer 2012 shoe collection are just beginning to discover India’s rich and luxurious fashion wealth, designer Saloni Lodha has been inspired by her native country for almost a decade and lately her commitment to giving a ‘Made in India’ label new status has been adding to her success – just ask celebrity clients like Emma Watson and Naomi Watts.

Saloni, which, by the way, is Sanskrit for ‘beautiful’, studied graphic design, textiles and print and in 2003 moved to Hong Kong where she quickly made a name as fashion designer before launching her label at London Fashion Week spring/summer 2008 with dresses inspired by her Indian heritage. Her signature styles incorporate ancient Indian embroidery techniques, flowing fabrics and hand-painted prints with handcrafted accents in modern silhouettes. What’s more, she is committed to employing traditional craftsman in India to achieve this, from Kashmiri families who weave cashmere and silk scarves to a Himalayan women’s knitting cooperative.

Since moving to the UK, the 30-year-old designer has extended her business to include jewellery and handbags, and she writes for the Vogue blog (see here).

Have a look at her spring/summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection below. It speaks for itself.
