Founder of Style House Files and Lagos Fashion and Design Week, Omoyemi Akerele, on her challenges, favourite beauty products and what she’ll never be caught dead wearing!
How have you been able to achieve LFDW despite economic instabilities?
It’s been the sheer grace of God. Our goal as a platform has always been to impact the industry but we can’t achieve this without the right partners. The support of credible partners who believe in us is a plus. There’s still so much ahead of us but we are confident that the future remains bright for the work we do and the sector as a whole.
How close do you think African designers are to getting it right when it comes to the business of fashion?
We are on our way there but we still have a long way to go. The entire apparel, garment and fashion sector needs a lot to catapult it to the level it needs to begin to operate in. Infrastructure, access to raw materials, access to apparel production, funding, distribution and so much more are some of the most pressing needs that need to be addressed.
What are you currently listening to?
Hillsong’s Wonder Album, John Legend & Cynthia Erivo – God Only Knows, Davido – IF, Victoria Orenze – Set My Heart on Fire, Bethel’s Reckless Love and so much more.
What would you never be caught dead wearing?
Innerwear as outerwear.
What’s a typical day like for you?
I usually schedule my days around my daughters’ school drop off and pick up. Over the years, I think I’ve mastered the art of ensuring meetings and everything else, fits perfectly around what I consider my most important activity of the day. I feel incredibly privileged that I can do this myself most times and will not sacrifice it for anything in the world – one of the perks of working for myself I guess.
Favourite beauty products?
Lip balm, Eyebrow pencil, and Mascara.
What’s your favourite quote?
“The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise, wealth to the brilliant, or favour to the learned, but time and chance happen to them all.” (Time and Chance).
God is my ultimate source of inspiration and strength. I am incredibly blessed to have amazing people around me that I draw strength and inspiration from… My husband Olatokunbo’s unending support and belief in me is a great source of inspiration. It’s natural that he sits as the Chair of the platform and Style House Files initiatives. He gives unendingly and has contributed significantly to where we are today – my daughters, our parents and siblings too.
Team LFDW – they are the best! An incredible group of people who have tapped into the LFDW vision and work with us beyond their scope of work in creating a platform that’s gradually on the path to achieving its aims and objectives.
Women like Nkoyo Rapu, Myma Belo-Osagie, Osayi Alile Oruene, Kim Sung Joo, Yasmin Sewell, Oby Ezekwesili, Fern Mallis inspire me, for different reasons.
Lagos Fashion and Design Week will take place in Lagos from October 25th to October 28th, 2017.
