Our August issue is all about celebrating women – and today is as a good a day as any to remind you why we should be. If you’re sitting with your feet up, enjoying a break from your desk (as you should be), spare a thought for the thousands of women who raised their voices in opposition to Apartheid Pass Laws on 9 August 1956.

In a peaceful march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, led by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, they proposed changes to the Urban Areas Act that restricted the movement of non-white South Africans in white areas. Once they delivered petitions with more than 100 00 signatures to the then prime minister, J.G. Stijdom, the group of 20 000 women stood in silent protest for 30 minutes. The protest song composed for the occasion ‘Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo!’ (Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock) has become a slogan that represents women’s courage and strength in South Africa in more recent times.

Every year since 1994, National Women’s Day has been celebrated in South Africa, in commemoration of that day. So enjoy the day off, sit back and soak up a copy of the August Issue of ELLE, filled with women worth celebrating and our special Female Factor report. You’re bound to find some empowering inspiration.
