Today we celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday and you should know by now (from the tweets, Facebook posts and elle.co.za coverage) that the ELLE belles have embarked on a knitting drive. Several members of the ELLE team (with the help of grandmothers, friends and even colleagues who are not above being bribed) have already done their bit.

One blanket is good but many blankets are better. So now it’s over to you. If you haven’t yet devoted your 67 minutes to making the world a better – and warmer – place by knitting a block of 67 rows with 67 stitches, it’s not too late. After all, every day should be Mandela Day.

Send us your 67 x 67 knitted blocks and we will add them to ours. You can use any wool you like, in any colour. You can even knit stripes or make any design you like, but only use plain garter stitch, please, and leave about a metre of yarn after you’ve cast off so we can use it to sew the squares together.

Then drop your squares (or rectangles) off at our Cape Town or Jo’burg office (we’d love it if you came to say hi) by the close of Friday 27 July.

We are at:

• 105 Hatfield Street, Gardens, Cape Town; address it to Jenna McArthur

• 37 Bath Avenue, Rosebank, Jo’burg; address it to Cheska Liackman.
