Miniskirt March

The ANC Women’s League is urging women who have had enough of the high rate of women abuse in South Africa to join in their Miniskirt March in Jo’burg today. The protest comes after two girls were assaulted at the Noord Street taxi rank in Jo’burg in January this year where they were groped, had their clothing pulled at and photos taken of them by a group of men. It has long been a poor defence by men that women wearing short or revealing clothing are ‘asking for it’ and ‘want to be objectified in that way. This, we all know, is certainly not the case.

The Women’s League has said: ‘We want to make a strong statement letting the perpetrators know that abuse in any form will not be tolerated and are inviting those who wish to wear miniskirts as an act of defiance to do so with pride.’ They have called on NGOs, students, churches and the youth to join the protest against the violence against women and children.

The protest has been supported by Cosatu and The National Union of Mineworkers who said in a statement: ‘The right of women to freedom of movement, freedom from sexual harassment and the right to dignity in our society can never be determined by the clothes a woman chooses to wear.’

The march starts at 2pm today and will begin at the Bree Street taxi rank in Jo’burg. It will then pass through the Noord taxi rank and culminate with the handing over of a memorandum to the Justice Minister or his representative at the Equality Court in Pritchard Street.
