Fashion director Poppy had a ball at last night’s MBFW AFRICA and here’s why:

‘Last night was a very good night for me, a very good night indeed! And my favourite designers on the night all had a few things in common: a strong design signature to which they remained true; a well-produced and well-thought-out show including considered hair and make-up, carefully plotted rhythm and sophisticated styling. This despite the fact that I cannot imagine a more diverse trio than Fred Sathal, Gavin Rajah and Marianne Fassler – perhaps that’s why I enjoyed myself so much!

‘The evening started off with a bang. I would go as far as to say that French designer Fred Sathal’s show is my MBFW AFRICA highlight so far – with multi-coloured and multi-sized sequins, cashmere knits, military shirts, chain mail dresses and dye effects galore. Looking at the collection was like looking into the galaxy – the clothes were like wearable star constellations. It was exactly what I needed to see. The pictures speak for themselves.

‘The second designer to show was the one and only Marianne Fassler. The collection had pretty much every ingredient required to make it quintessentially African: animal print, traditional textiles, bold colour, recycled elements and craft… basically everything we love about Marianne Fassler. I was particularly taken with the crochet pieces, especially the royal blue knitted maxi worn over a neon green slip.

‘The night ended with none other than Gavin Rajah’s show – which, as expected, delivered a glamour overload. That said, there was a significant lack of gowns, which I personally found refreshing. The show consisted of three stories. One was very sophisticated and seductive – leopard print in silks and satin, sequined leopard print and touches of lace in a colour palette of black and gold – and the next one was the complete opposite, being predominantly pink. I have never really been into pink, but that changed last night. I thoroughly enjoyed the embellished bomber jackets, the long-length blazer and the wonderful white peplum twinset. The metallic story was by far my favourite: simple, minimalist shapes in matte metals in purples, blues and gunmetal. Well-done Gavin!
