First up we introduce to you ELLE editor, Jackie Burger. We asked Jackie about this year’s search, her love for fashion and, for those thinking of entering this year, her advice.
Tell us about the moment you first fell in love with fashion?
The unequivocal poise of a woman wearing discerning design. The first time I witnessed this powerful relationship between the wearer and the chosen design was a tipping point for me in my understanding of the spell of it all.
What are we looking for in the winner?
A designer that understands not just the aesthetic but also the commerce of contemporary fashion in South Africa and shows the necessary ambition to cultivate a successful fashion brand in our country.
What excites you about the Awards this year?
Last year was the launch of the ELLE Rising Star Design Award in association with Mr Price as an independent property; this year we want to not just inspire a larger contingent of designers to enter but the fashion community at large to support them and mobilize a support for local design, hence the roll out of the PR campaign to bloggers and fashion media.
What do you think South African design needs?
We have incredible talent but lack certain infrastructures and resources such as access to good fabric, manufacturing and funds to enable our designers to trade commercially. We also need the public to support and buy from local designers.
What words come to mind when we talk Rising Star?
The three Cs: Creativity. Commerce. Confidence.
What do you think the most important aspect of the competition is?
Our continued commitment to cultivate and expose design talent and to contribute to the growth of a greater fashion economy in South Africa.
And finally, anything our readers don’t know about you?
I can’t sew or knit, lame I know, but true.
