Let’s hear it for the sixth finalist competing for the ELLE Rising Star Design Award in association with Mr Price.  Meet design talent and self-confessed workaholic Tamara Cherie Dyson.

When did you know that fashion design was what you wanted to do?

Throughout my school career, art was my passion. From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be involved in the creative industry, but didn’t exactly know where I fitted into the bigger scheme of things. I jumped back and forth between the idea of fine art and architecture, but felt I couldn’t fully express my creativity in these fields. I became interested in fashion and design at about 16 years old, and that was that.

Tell us one thing we need to know about you as a designer?

I am an over analytical perfectionist with workaholic tendencies.

How did you feel when your name was called as a finalist?

I was actually in London at Graduate Fashion Week at the time, so I received the news via email, and when I read the subject line, I was too nervous to open it! I really couldn’t believe that I had made it through to the finals. I re-read the email a few times just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I am beyond excited!

One thing about your collection that sets you apart from the others?

I put so much of myself into this range that it really can’t be like anyone else’s collections, as it is true to who I personally am as a designer.

Do you work late at night or early mornings?

My late nights usually run into early morning work sessions, I’m quite the insomniac.

What do you listen to while you work?

A few hours will go by and I will suddenly realize I have been listening to the same few songs over and over and over. I pretty much zone out when I’m working.

Describe your favourite outfit?

A clean-cut fitted mint green Bettina Liano dress I bought a few years back in Melbourne. I love to just stare at it.

If design wasn’t an option what would you do?

I’d definitely work with animals.

Why do you want to win the ELLE Rising Star competition – what does it mean to you?

This competition is such an incredible platform for young emerging designers to fast-track their way into this tough industry, honestly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! To have the backing and support of such highly regarded and prestigious names in this industry would be a total honour and a blessing. Also, the prizes, especially the business training, are just so amazing and would definitely be such a help in starting up my own label.

First fashion memory?

Playing dress-up with my Barbie dolls.

Who would you love to dress?

Kate Bosworth or Kirsten Dunst.
