Introducing the seventh finalist competing for the ELLE Rising Star Design Award in association with Mr Price. Meet design talent and former Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Design student Jane Elizabeth Kotze. Here we find out more about her!

When did you know that fashion design was what you wanted to do?

When I was about 15 or 16, I was always drawing little collections and collecting fashion magazines and that was when the penny dropped

Tell us one thing we need to know about you as a designer?

Wow, that’s a difficult one. I guess I don’t like sticking to the same thing for too long, I change my style and approach quite rapidly, but I always like to pay close attention to detail and fit.

How did you feel when your name was called as a finalist?

I was completely shocked, we we’re told that the finalist would only be announced on the Friday, so I wasn’t even anticipating anything, and when Jackie Burger phoned me, it felt surreal.

One thing about your collection that sets you apart from the others?

Not knowing what the other finalists have done it’s difficult to say, I like to incorporate a little bit of fantasy into whatever I design, and I hope that’s what sets me apart as well.

Do you work late at night or early mornings?

Currently, both, but I prefer mornings.

What do you listen to while you work?

A lot of radio and some golden oldies and 80′s hits

Describe your favorite outfit?

I don’t really have a favourite outfit, or rather they change depending on my mood, whatever makes you feel confident and looks good is a favourite in my eyes.

If design wasn’t an option what would you do?

I would study Archeology or Veterinary Sciences

What would winning the ELLE Rising Star competition mean to you?

I’ve dreamed of just being a part of this competition for a very long time, the feeling of validation it has already given me, by just being a finalist is almost priceless. To win would be mind-bogglingly amazing, the exposure given to young designers in such a forum is a wonderful gift and inspiration to keep going in a tough industry.

First fashion memory?

Playing dress up as a toddler, it was my favourite game to play and still is!

Who would you love to dress?

Emma Stone, I think she has great style, but most of all a lovely personality to go with it!
