Ethiopian born and American raised handbag designer Abai Schulze is making headways with her young brand ZAAF. Drawing on her Ethiopian roots, ZAAF is a celebration of local culture and craftsmanship. Promoting Brand Ethiopia is also high on her to-do list, and so we asked Abai to let us in on her four favourite homegrown talents.
1. I love Liya Kebede’s ready-to-wear brand, Lemlem. The designs are fresh, light and colourful.
2. I adore Afomia and Mikhayel Tesfaye’s business model and their sense of style. They create exceptional products in Ethiopia and they market them well. They generally have a great outlook on Ethiopian fashion.
3. Fikirte Addis designs beautiful women causal and wedding dresses with handmade cotton. You can see her brand is passionately Ethiopian, which I appreciate very much.
4. Abaynesh Jembere is based in New York and recently started an eyewear brand called Jembere. It was a really pleasant surprise to see beautiful frames that have Ethiopian influences.
