There’s no rest for the wicked! Day three and four of MBFWCT came and went and we were in on the action from the front rows of David Tlale, La Lesso, Selfi, Stefania Morland and Fabiani. At times, it was tough (you try walking in heels for four days and nights, live tweeting, taking in what each collection had to offer, mingling, waiting, more waiting and all this while trying to look good). ELLE’s fashion team gives you the scoop on Day three and Four of MBFWCT here.

DAY THREE

Thula Sindi

Thula’s collection was a departure from his previous work. It was inspired by a 50’s housewife who, when her husband is away, experiments in darker elements that gradually consume her. It wasn’t all edgy, but he managed to strike a balance between the hard and soft. In between the black patent leather and metal detail was the sweetness of floral print and dip-dye which symbolised how she still retains her femininity. Styling is important in a show, and Thula’s looked accessible. According to the tweets we saw, his patent leather jacket styled with clashing peacock and animal print, was a winner.

Fabiani

Yes we are a women’s magazine, but we aren’t an all-female team. We sat though Fabiani with our ELLEFella Rusty, who enjoyed this show as much as we did. The show was a glimpse into the kind of lifestyle their client is used to. The set was a very luxurious “Fabiani Grand Hotel”. The models emerged down the runway from the hotel onto a grass-covered runway, some carrying golf clubs, and others tote bags. We saw trends that we had previously highlighted in this collection: Gingham, pastels and clashing prints. Fabiani menswear was styled beautifully, the clothing was much more streamlined and tailored with perfect finishing and superior fabrication – something womenswear designers need to take note of too.

SELFI

‘Selfi designer, Celeste, knows how to dress a woman! I absolutely loved her choice of off-white, navy and burnt orange which amounted to a beautifully put together collection of well-fitted, great quality pieces. The ELLE Belles were swooning over the neoprene structured off-white skirt – we love!’ – Tarryn Oppel, fashion editor

 Day Four

Stefania Morland

‘A flawless show! A 60-piece orchestra, feathers, bows, a subtle hint of shimmer and graceful models – I didn’t want it to end! You can always expect Stefania to showcase impeccable quality garments, which are well thought out to create a cohesive collection. I loved the colours, the music and the showstopper with the model resembling Marie Antoinette in a beautifully encrusted gown followed by her ‘ladies in waiting’ – It was definitely one of my fashion week highlights’ – Tarryn Oppel, fashion editor

Runway

David Tlale

‘With a street in Bo Kaap as the runway and an entrance by David in a Mercedes convertible, revving his way through the crowd (no surprise), I was hoping for something extraordinary! We’d expected to see a “Resort” collection, but heavily beaded and highly structured don’t say “summer getaway” to me. I did however love the structured dress and umbrella skirt paired with a super cute cropped jacket and the ultra feminine lace pencil skirt! The head-to-toe white ensembles were very refreshing on a sunny Saturday afternoon and the dip dyed hosiery was the perfect way to introduce colour to the collection!’ – Tarryn Oppel

‘We are used to David’s opulent and embellished collections. With a theme that contained the word “colour”, it was easy to expect a bright collection. But he did the unexpected – an all-white minimalist palette, with no music, lights or set. With the colourful houses of Bo Kaap as this backdrop, David decided to put out stark white – the colour we enjoy so much this season.’ – Fashion editor, Asanda Sizani

Lalesso

We enjoyed the styling at Lalesso. It was what we always expect from them: easy Summer-ready dresses and playsuits. They introduced four new prints in this collection – their new geometric print was a modern interpretation of tribal print. And the statement accessories and headscarves were a highlight.
