Fashion Director Poppy Evans jetted off to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa (MBFWA) last week. Here, she share her highlights with us:

David Tlale

‘I loved the sheer, rosy-hued, silk chiffon pieces – surprisingly even the menswear pieces – especially the peach draped shirt worn by local male style icon Ty Keogh.’

Deola Sagoe

‘Although the silhouettes didn’t vary much, the beautiful, metallic cut-out fabric was sensational – so perfect, in fact, that I thought it had been laser cut. Deola is simply fabulous and I loved that there was no final runway walk and bow, but a dance at end of the show instead!’

Ituen Basi

‘The sense of humour present in this collection is unlike anything else I have seen all week. One of the prints in the collection consisted of photographed newspaper articles about the label itself – both genius and newsworthy!’

Klûk CGDT

‘There was no confusion as to the source of inspiration behind this collection. The Orient was written all over the show, complete with Oriental furnishings and sushi. As usual, the collection delivered on glamour and fantasy – which is what KLûK CGDT does best. My favourite element of the show was the short fashion film, starring model Katryn Kruger.’

Loin Cloth and Ashes

‘Designer Anisa Mpungwe took her signature textiles to the next level with this collection by pairing them with metallics. Anele Mdoda not only walked the ramp for her this time, but also collaborated with her on designing the collection. I love partnerships like these.’

Maki Oh

‘This was a very interesting show as there were many competing elements. I loved the use of fringing and her signature slashing of fabrics to create patterns. I also enjoyed her use of traditional prints.’

Mimi Plange

‘This show was very different to anything else we had seen all week. Pastels and florals kept the collection feminine and fresh, and there was also a strong focus on structure and form. I really liked the quilted leather pieces.’

Taibo Bacar

‘My absolute highlight of MBFWA was this show. To me, his collection exemplifies 21st-century African fashion designs. Read Showstopper in ELLE’s December issue to find out more!’

Thula Sindi

‘This was one of his most exciting collections for me. I loved the use of shine and sequins, especially in the same pattern as his prints. The return of bold colour to his clothes was great. I thought it was a very appropriate collection for MBFWA.’
