The much-loved local designer wows again with his signature technique and attention to detail.
His latest collection is a feast for the eyes as he reinterprets the frill and marries sophistication with the modern era. The collaboration saw Kelly Fung as the stylist and art director, Cape Town-based photographer, Katinka Bester, and Sudanese model, Anyon come together to create a secret garden of vivid dreams.
Nolim reimagines the refined woman with a considered element of youth. “The collection is my interpretation of SS18, and my obsession with sleeves again. This body of work is more fun than any of my previous works”. A collection which marries the styles of “The older Aunt her younger niece” ensures the stamp of the vigorous Matte Nolim woman is carried through in each look.
“I call this collection Frill Matters because I also feel I am working towards defining beauty with my signature but letting the woman recognize or imagine themselves in the clothes, Kelly and I shared some ideas and it seemed everything we needed for this shoot was easily handled available in Cape Town. She [Fung] gets what message I’m trying to convey with the brand and we both wanted to sell the clothes through the lookbook.” The coming together of creative minds allowed for a seamless and subtle elevation of the label.
“At this stage of my career I am trying to give the brand a solid voice and a clear message of who we are talking to, and a lookbook made sense in terms of what the brand needed to say to the woman right now… The Matte Nolim woman is still the same as last season, I just had to show her fun side a little more… I really hope the lovely model we chose and the clothes connect to the Matte Nolim woman”
