Valentine’s Day has put us in the mood for old-fashioned romance – like the forties-inspired love story senior fashion editor Poppy Evans styled for our March issue. ‘Strangers When We Meet’ (page 66) was shot on location at the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe Transport/Railway museum in George. Join us behind the scenes in this exclusive online video.

ELLE: Highlight of the shoot?

POPPY: On this particular shoot it has to be my crew. We worked in 48-degree heat inside what is essentially a giant tin shack on one of the most humid days George has ever seen. We were all ridiculously uncomfortable and stressed, but everybody held it together and, even when I started to cry a little, no-one else fell apart! I don’t think any other crew would have pulled it off!

ELLE: So there were challenges?

POPPY: Aside from the heat, the museum and especially the trains themselves are very small spaces to shoot in, which made life less than easy for photographer Jean-Pierre. It was also very difficult to find the right clothing for the story, so I relied on little details such as the Christopher Strong collars to give certain dresses more of a ’40s look. Because of the humidity, the model’s hair kept coming loose, and the curls refused to hold. In the end we had to put it up, but, in hindsight, I much prefer it that way.

ELLE: Which is your best shot?

POPPY: I love the beauty shot on page 75. If you look closely, you will see the male character is in the window reflection, which I think gives the story narrative depth.

ELLE: Can you reveal any tricks of the trade?

POPPY: We used a smoke machine to give the impression that the train was moving. It was necessary to bring drama into the shoot in order to really make the most of the location. Jean-Pierre had to be very clever about lighting, as we kept moving from inside to outdoors.

ELLE: Any funny moments?

POPPY: I think my hysterical breakdown was probably quite funny for everybody else. We also renamed Roice (ELLE’s videographer) Orlando due to his uncanny resemblance to Orlando Bloom, and our boy model Richard was given the name Josh (as in Josh Hartnett). They are both very nice to look at and kept me entertained when humour failed me.

Siyasanga Denga on 2/16/2012: Looks similar to the one P Diddy did for... I don't even remember what it was for. I like this one more though, because it's got that rugged vintage feel to it, especially the photo effects. Keep up the good work Sis' Poppy!
Anwyn on 3/19/2012: Shot on the location at the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe Railway so amazing and intense. The costumes and make up well done and perfect.
