It looks like our favourite wolf pack is in trouble with a fashion heavyweight after the Louis Vuitton division of the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton Group has claimed that the producers of The Hangover Part II knowingly used imitations of the famously branded luggage in the film. ELLE’s online intern Sarah Koopman investigates.

According to The Guardian, the scene that caused all the trouble has the off-the-wall Alan (Zach Galifianakis) strutting through an airport, Louis Vuitton duffle bag lookalike slung over the shoulder. The bag looks just like the famous brown luggage we know so well, but closer inspection shows that the monogram contains an extra letter: LVM instead of LV.

Apparently the luxury brand asked Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. not to use the fake luggage produced by a company called Diophy. (Louis Vuitton is suing Diophy before the International Trade Commission too.) Furthermore, LVMH claims that Galifianakis’ mispronunciation – he says to a costar: ‘Careful, that is a Lou-is Vuitton’– may cause ‘consumer confusion’.

The group, who filed the suit in the Southern District of New York, is seeking profits from the film (which grossed about R4.7 billion) and triple damages. LVMH has also asked Warner Bros. to destroy all promotional material depicting the airport scene with the counterfeit bag.
