Founders of fashion brand Mille Collines, Marc Oliver and Inés Cuatrecasas had an amazing 2016 which saw them wow everyone at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, as well as expand their business which was initially founded in Kigali, Rwanda, through to South Africa. We caught up with them to chat about the year that was 2016, as well their motto for the year ahead.
With so much that has happened in your business in 2016, which is your absolute highlight?
Our fashion show for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Joburg in March.
And what are some of the challenges you faced?
Having relocated part of the team from East Africa to Cape Town, it’s been challenging to be divided and far apart. We have had to learn to work with the distance and make the most of it.
Which trends in 2016 were your favourite?
Turtle necks, we are crazy about them! And the strong influence of sportswear in ready to wear.
What trends do you never want to see again?
Socks and sandals and the madness of the fringes.
What are you most grateful for from 2016?
Our team. They believe in what we are doing and always go the extra mile to get us further. With the challenges of growing further and part of the team relocating it has been even more important to trust and rely on our team in East Africa.
Who have you worked with this year, that deserves a major shout out?
Deon Redman and his entire team. For their honest work and for helping us realize our vision and share it so beautifully.
What 2017 trend are you excited about?
Yellow as a colour and trench coats, We’ve always loved their masculine edge, it makes a woman feel powerful.
What is your 2017 mantra/motto/meditation?
Be yourself, everyone else is taken.
