After months of hard work, commitment and plenty of passion, our ELLE Rising Star 2013 Design Award in association with Mr Price finalists showed their collections at the Westin Grand Hotel in Cape Town. It was a night of celebration for ELLE and Mr Price and at the end of the evening it was 22-year-old Nick Coutts’ collection titled ‘Strength versus fragility’ which took home the award.
ELLE’s Jackie Burger with Mr Price’s Managing Director, Nicky Lyne
Show production by the brilliant Deon Redman. How amazing is the runway? Industrial fluorescent lights from Osram made for a modern and futuristic set and the slick white floors courtesy of Instant flooring!
Our 2013 ELLE Rising Star Design Award in association with Mr Price winner, Nick Coutts
‘I want to wear everything in Nick’s collection. His brilliant understanding of texture and density gives the collection a unique allure and doubtless sensuality. I am in awe of Nick’s hand-woven knitwear, and super impressed by his plans to turn this side of his brand into a sustainable business empowering less fortunate women – it proves Nick has the ultimate ELLE combination; style and substance! I love the structured frills on his trousers and skirts, that usually would feel heavy and thick when done in tweed, but appear delicate and perfectly balanced in this instance when paired with lightweight, semi revealing tops and maxi dresses. Nick’s collection has something timeless about it that I can’t quite put my finger on. Further to that, this is a collection that I would have applauded any established designer for (yet nick is only in his third year of studies). His creativity, quality and considered design make me not only believe that he deserves a place in the industry right now, but that he will have a role in South African fashion 10 years from now too.’
A collection of hot white separates and minimalism. Lukhanyo Mdingi sent modern and futuristic pieces down the runway with transparent panelling and metallic cuts.
Rising Star finalist Mieke took us on a symbolic journey last night with her Neo-Voortrekker collection of silhouettes with an ethereal and drifting mood mimicking traditional garments, with futuristic elements. Her attention to detail, exquisite quilting and skill made our hearts skip a beat.
Valerie’s ‘Up in the clouds’ collection is beautifully calming. Taking inspiration from clouds, she sent flowing silhouettes and dreamlike pieces in soft hues down the catwalk. We love her addition of dainty jewellery and cloud earrings, too. Oh and did we mention the scalloped tops? A definite highlight.
Julia’s take on print is sensational. Her African-inspired print combinations are very unique. The fabrics are a reflection of her heritage and inspired by a fishing village in Congo. We love the fresh take on prints against polished and feminine shapes.
Jenevieve’s Papyrus collection is for the fearless woman. Her focus on proportion, structure and sharp lines against cool colours and sheer fabric took our breath away. We love the play on long and short, sheer and solid and hard and soft. Jenevieve’s use of cracked-paint effect is bold and beautiful!
Interesting prints and detailed pattern work from Elli-Nicole. We love the balance of luxe and elegance with a minimal edge. Can we just have a moment for the transparent accessories?
Jacqueline Le Grange
Jacqueline’s blooms make us happy. Her ‘Petrichor’ collection inspired by the Company Gardens is romantic and pretty, but while her pieces tell a fairytale story they are still modern with sports-inspired shapes, traditional quilting, floral print and hints of leather.
2012 ELLE Rising Star Design Award in association with Mr Price winner, Jane Elizabeth Kotze
Well, hello Jane! This collection wowed us and left Jackie speechless. The ELLE belles want every item and judging by the buzz on Twitter – you love it too! Pastel hues against sequin and shine make this any woman’s dream. The collection feels chic, polished and perfectly tailored. Texture, layering and attention to detail – Jane, we love you!
