It’s that time of year again, when there’s an Oscar buzz in the air. One of the films that is definitely getting its fair share of mentions is Life of Pi. In a nutshell, it is the story of Pi, a teenage boy who has to spend more than 200 days in a lifeboat with a tiger. It sounds a little far-fetched, but believe us, it’s not. It will touch you and make you think in more ways than one.

What’s more, we’re giving away 10 double tickets just in time for the summer holiday, compliments of Nu Metro. To enter, tell us why you would like to see this film by commenting below.

Remember, Life of Pi will only be on Nu Metro’s screens on 21 December. We’ve seen the trailer (watch it here) and it looks amazing.

This competition is now closed. Congratulations to our lucky Life of Pi ticket winners; Tasmin Ranger, Kerryn Kiely, Nirma Madhoo, Samkelo Ngqokwe, Jordan, Andrea, Debbie Brenner, Susan Owen, Christie Wolmarans and Steve Reeve! We’ll be in touch shortly!

To whet your appetite, here’s an interview with the 19-year-old lead, Suraj Sharma, who is making his silver-screen debut in this fil by director Ang Lee.

Q: What is the basic story about?

A: ‘It is about Pi, a 16-year-old boy who grows up in a zoo in India with his family. They are forced to move to Canada and take their entire zoo with them on a ship. When it sinks, his whole family drowns and he is left alone on a lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a tiger. Eventually he’s left with just the tiger (called Richard Parker) and he has to try to survive on the Pacific Ocean. To me, the story is about you how you can find hope in the craziest, most random of things and how you can build on that and save yourself from anything: from sadness, depression, fear. You just need to find something to believe in.’

Q: What was it like sharing the screen with a tiger, or several tigers (more than one were used to play Richard Parker)?

A: ‘There were four tigers of different sizes and personalities. We were never really filmed together but I spent up to six hours a day watching them being trained. I’d watch how they move and see how they would behave. I’d kind of map it my head so I would have a sense of how the tiger was going to react and what he was going through. When we were filming my scenes I would just imagine Richard Parker in front of me. It was hard but it was cool, like having an imaginary best friend. It used a weird combination of memory and imagination.’

Did you have to get fit for the role?
A: ‘When I first came to Taiwan [where the film was shot] I was a really skinny twig. There was no muscle on me. I didn’t have a straight back. It was really pathetic, in fact. Then I trained with the stunt guys. They taught me to swim and I had to learn to hold my breath under water for five minutes! I got stronger and had gained 13 kilos by the time we began shooting. Then I lost 14 [during the time Pi is out at sea]. My body changed unbelievably. For the time that I was “shipwrecked”, I was on this crazy tuna and salad diet and could not eat carbs. I had to drink electrolytes.’

Q: What was your life like before getting the role of Pi?
A: ‘It consisted of a routine: wake up, go to school, get shouted at by teachers, hang around with friends, come back, play football, eat and sleep. To some extent that was fun. That life was fun. It was carefree. Then everything changed. I grew so much. I was just a normal kid from Delhi before doing the movie.

Q: Have you changed?

A: ‘The experience has completely altered my perception of life. I have a lot more faith in life. I’ve become more confident. I’m more comfortable in myself. Now I want my whole life to be an adventure. I want every minute of my life to be challenging and exciting with things to overcome all the time.

Karen on 10/22/2012: This sounds like a different type of not so common Hollywood story. It seems like it has a great message about how one can triumph over any adversity. Its good to see things from a different perspective to your own. To remember our humanity at the end of the day.
Tamsin Ranger on 10/22/2012: I read the book when it first came out and was really moved by it; coupled with the fact that I am a huge Ang Lee fan, means that I can't wait to see how they have created the world that Pi inhabits on that boat in the middle of the ocean. From the trailer it looks visually stunning. I'm very excited!
Louise on 10/23/2012: I love a movie that takes me away into a different world. Especially with the holiday season coming up.
kerryn kiely on 10/23/2012: I read the book, and loved it, so this is why I will definitely be seeing the movie.
Nirma Madhoo on 10/23/2012: I discussed the book with my partner and were further intrigued when we started realising that the different animals may have been metaphors for the different human characters within the story. I won't give it away here... but I am really looking forward to the première so I can put faces and a scenery to a narrative that enchanted me so much in book form.
Terry Flack on 10/23/2012: An epic man vs. beast tale told in the violet serenity of the ocean. Come on movie, do your best!! Tore through the book like a.... ...not a chance am I going to say it!!
Philippa Kethro on 10/24/2012: What I remember (maybe not correctly) was Pi's progression from fear of Richard Parker on his raft, to the need to fish for Richard Parker to keep him at bay, and eventually the attachment to Richard Parker, who however just walks off without a backward glance. Sort like where our our fears and attachments might lead. Just loved how the tiger gets to called Richard Parker
Christine Kuch on 10/24/2012: The book and the behind the scenes info in the interview are such motivation to see the film - plus the Ang Lee magic. Can't wait for it to come on circuit now.
Susan Owen on 10/24/2012: It looks like a movie with more than just sitting and enjoying yourself, you can actually think about life especially your own and focus on hope for the future. I have also ready the book and would love to see the movie!
Christie Wolmarans on 10/24/2012: I have read the book and cannot wait to see the movie! I like movies that makes you think about life.
Samkelo Ngqokwe on 10/24/2012: In a time when movies are sold to us, by hollywood stars regardless if the content of the movie has substance or not. Its refreshing and original to find a movie that promices to move and touch, and still not rellying on talentless hollywood A - Listers taking risks and recognising real originality sort of like Solange on the cover of Novembers ELLE
Shayne on 10/24/2012: Yann Martel's whisks you way on a journey full of tension, surprise and ultimately the reality of human nature. It is with these feelings that i anticipate to be taken on a the film version of this masterpiece.
debbie brenner on 10/25/2012: This movie would be a great experience it reflects and reveals some really true qualities that ae sometimes missing in real life. I would love to see it.
Chane' Malan on 10/26/2012: I would like to go watch the movie, because it's about a tiger and I'm from Tygerberg Highschool and we're called the "Tigers". It really looks like a awesome movie to watch..
Michelle on 10/26/2012: This movie makes a nice change from the usual Hollywood hype. We all can do with some inspiration and motivation in todays world

Alison Geduld on 10/29/2012: I love movies with beautiful images! Heart-stoppingly beautiful ones in this movie.
Steve Reeve on 10/29/2012: I love this book, really capptured my imagination.
Carynne Millard on 10/30/2012: This is a movie for a young teenage boy like Blue Lagoon was for young teenage girls 20 years ago. It is filled with adventure and discovering one self. I would love to have my 13 year old see this and understand that you are only limited by yourself.
Jessica Lewin on 11/6/2012: I have been waiting so many years for this movie to come out. I read the book many years ago, one of the first ones I managed to finish in my younger, more energetic days, and it changed my life. It changed it by allowing me to think differently and through a new perspective. What if I was stuck on that boat with those animals and then that tiger? Would I jump off or would I do what PI did? Either directions would of changed destiny. PI is a book I have recommended many many times and now wish to see it on the big screen to be able to recommend it again, yet through a different channel and now through eyes instead of through imagination.
Jordan on 11/12/2012: I would love to win tickets because it would be great to watch an inspirational movie! This one sounds amazing!
Phillip on 11/14/2012: Two words: Tiger poo. If you've read the book, you'll know why. Can't wait to see if it's featured...
debbie brenner on 12/5/2012: This inspirational message has made me realize that life although there are times of difficulties we can overcome them. i would love to see the movie to restore my belief in humanity.
Susan Owen on 1/23/2013: Hi there, I am so disappointed, I have won tickets but nobody contacted me, also Christie Wolmarans? Regards
