On Saturday ELLE’s Style Reporter in association with BlackBerry finalist Nomanqoba Mthembu joined ELLE belle Refilwe Boikanyo at the Secret Concert brought to you by BlackBerry and featuring grammy nominee, Kid Cudi. They let us in on what went down here:
‘One of my highlights was watching local rapper AKA celebrating his Metro FM Award win for best hit single just before going on stage as Kid Cudi’s surprise opening act. BlackBerry kept us guessing throughout the evening. After the change of venue we were bumped from the front row to the back but we had a great time regardless because the stage was high, the sound was great and Kid Cudi gave a great performance and interacted with the crowd.’
Our ELLE Style Reporter finalist reports on the event through her snaps here :
‘With 1 000 people waiting to kickstart the night, we all arrived at a sports club on the East Rand believing that we had made it into the secret venue. But the BlackBerry team didn’t call this a secret concert for nothing. We were escorted in blacked out minibuses to, well we had no idea, untill we arrived at the venue on a red carpet. The venue was a cosy intimate area with no sign of the Johannesburg city skyline to orientate yourself. Guesses as to where we were soon flew right out the window when the main opening act, Metro FM Award winner AKA, took to the stage. Kid Cudi fans, believing they were minutes away from witnessing his performance, were then taken on another rollercoaster, as the organisers revealed that this was in fact not the official venue for his performance. The announcement that we should all flock next door, would send us through a passageway of doors that led us to a basement area. It was on this main stage that Kid Cudi finally arrived, in Chinos, Jordan retro 10’s and a leather vest dashiki top. He performed tracks form all three of his albums; the energy was real and the concert unmatched.’
