Big news, people! It’s a happy Tuesday for us as 2011 Rising Star Design Award winner Kelly Esterhuyse’s range hits Mr Price stores today!  Yes, another amazing range from a talented young designer launches under their Project label! It’s a limited-edition range, so be quick or start shopping online here.

The range includes tropical prints, knits and beautifully tailored pieces – and Kelly is just as excited as we are: ‘It is my first range going into a retail store! It’s so exciting! My main inspiration was the tropical trends of 2012.

‘The highlights of my journey was the incredible internship I experienced at the Mr Price head office in Durban. Seeing the entire process of a retail range going into stores was a big eye opener and an education. Receiving the box with my samples was overwhelming and actually seeing my designs come to life with my name on the garments was utterly surreal!

‘I have learnt a lot! The biggest lesson was that this opportunity is what you make of it. It is important to make the most of the title in all ways possible and to be organised and punctual. Most of all, be true to yourself and your brand.’

How does it feel now that your range is finally a reality?

I am feeling incredibly elated. It has actually been a lifelong dream to have a range in a retail store and now it is coming true. Eeeeeeek!!

What are the key items in your range?

The printed blazer, printed pants and a yellow high-low sleeveless shirt.

Who is your fashion icon and why? Sandra Buckland. She does incredible architectural knits and I admire her skills and vision with yarn.

Do you have a favourite non-fashion treat you allow yourself?

Onion marmalade. I’m obsessed!

If your house were on fire, what would you save? My laptop, all my photos are on it. That’s years and years of memories and shoots.

Fashion is… As Coco Chanel said: ‘Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.’
