Last week we told you about the new scent, MYNY by Donna Karan New York. A fruity, floral fragrance that celebrates the city and the women who live there. Over the next six weeks we’ll be talking to ten up-and-coming female photographers, asking them to #BeAPartOfIt and to share their visual, urban stories illustrating what puts their city on the world class creative map.

First up? Katja Marr

"Cape Town and New York share vibrant cultures when it comes to food and fashion – things that we can all relate to in one way or another. My series incorporates both of these aspects of inner city life – the outfits are inspired by edgy street style, and I used sweet foods as props to convey the sweetness of the MYNY fragrance" – Katja Marr.

Everyone has a moment when the only thing in the world they want is to sink their teeth into something sugary and delicious, which is what this series celebrates.

Tell us about yourself?

I’m a 20-year-old film photographer, born and bred in Cape Town. I am obsessed with capturing beautiful scenes, my favorite animal is the cat, and I love pizza and milkshakes.

Your style is….

Comfortable to wear and simple enough not to mess up!

What was the concept behind the shoot?

I realized that Cape Town is not famous for its skyscrapers or for being a concrete jungle, unlike the colossal New York City. So I wanted to incorporate themes that I could relate to, and fashion and food were the obvious choices – my two vices.

What makes Cape Town South Africa’s answer to New York?

Both Cape Town and New York are fashion capitals and share a rich food culture. You could say that both cities have a love for these aspects – and they are accessible enough to be something we can (and should) all take a bite out of ;)

Rita Ora is….

Like a black widow, baby!

Where was this shot?

We shot in Green Market Square because there’s a cool ice cream store right there. There was a definite logistical necessity for the location because it was the hottest day and the ice cream melted fast. We also shot downtown near the Artscape, as I wanted to use the industrial-looking architecture as a clean backdrop for some of the images.

What were your criteria for choosing your models?

I chose quirky models, because it takes a fun personality to do a shoot holding and eating food. You have to be able to laugh at yourself.

And which is your favourite shot?

Definitely the image with the rose petal cupcake, because we all tried that cupcake after Shani had bitten into it and it was actually the best cupcake I’ve ever had

Can you name 3 photographers who inspire you?

Holli Fernando, Charlotte Rutherford and Mariam Sitchinava must be three of the first photographers I started following online when I was very young. I still love Charlotte’s playful and energetic subject matter: she’s amazing and unique. I admire Mariam Sitchinava and Hollie Fernando because they shoot on film and their images sparked my obsession with the medium of film photography.

What are your 3 trends for summer street style?

Easy summer dresses, Birkenstocks and bright lips.
