On page 83 of our January issue Tarryn Oppel shows us how to dress holiday style. Watch our behind-the-scenes video below. We asked Tarryn:

ELLE Shops
How ToWhat’s the big idea?

These how-to pages are now an ELLE regular. We love them because they’re accessible, with something for everyone. For January, I wanted to team swimwear with clothing. I created four holiday scenarios to make sure that each page was different and told its story in a strong voice.

Tell us more about the styling.

I chose four themes: city, retreat, surfer and island. The styling reflected the type of girl I imagined would go on each type of vacation. For example, the city is like an urban concrete jungle and I wanted the clothing to reflect that. I used muted tones with a touch of metallic, while for the island-themed look the styling was colourful and fun with mismatched prints and oversized accessories.

What do you love about the shoot?

First of all I love our model, Michelle. I thought of her right away because she’s got lots of personality and that girl-next-door look which is just right for the how-to stories. The fact that I got to style two looks for each page was so much fun! I also loved using props to make the story come alive; it makes things easier to envision when all you have is a white studio.

Tell us about the hair and make-up.

Pure and simple. Clean make-up, just a bit of a rosy cheek, some mascara and a dewy lip. But I did decide to add a bright lip colour when she made her way to an island getaway. The hair changed for every scenario and helped to convey the idea that she was on a different trip at every turn of the page.

What do you hope readers will take away from your shoot?

What’s great about the how-to shoots in general is that it includes tips and more text than other fashion stories. So we can share lots of useful information. I really hope that our readers will take some pointers from these pages when they pack to go away this holiday, even if it’s just to go camping or surfing.

Any funny moments?

The shoot was fun in general! It was just so easy with the energetic crew on set… Everyone fell in love with the Puma bicycle and demanded a little ride on it!

Any challenges?

Nothing besides carting the props to the studio. I had to borrow my mom’s van for the bicycle and surfboard. They’re also really valuable, which made me nervous, but it all worked out just fine in the end!

P.S make a run for Woolworths stores and quick! On page 84 of this shoot both beautiful flats (yes, the cotton sandals and the suede sandals) have sold out already and on page 88 the canvas and elastic sandals in hot pink are available while stock lasts.
