We asked you via Facebook and Twitter to name the South Africans who inspire you. Then we asked these inspiring South Africans who inspire them. Here, as promised in our March issue, is the fourth of our 10-part online series, ‘Who Inspires the Inspiring’.

Marianne Fassler, designer

I have always admired people with individual style and alternative views on life and their commitment to making our lives more interesting and more vibrant. Reading about the likes of Peggy Guggenheim, La Marchesa Louisa Casati, Diana Vreeland, and Coco Chanel, I found a resonance with their desire to ‘live their art’ and to deconstruct and re-invent conventional dress codes. I was also very much inspired by (almost) contemporaries like Rei Kawabuko of Comme des Garçons and [Vogue US creative director] Grace Coddington.

sharon raditsela on 2/20/2012: COCO CHANEL. i think women have forgoten what elegance is. women are more relaxed in the way they dress. i, personally, think thats the main cause of breakups in relationships. partners move on to find better. everyday we should dress like we're about to bump to Queen Elizabeth by the corner. LOL. Just saying.
