Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week is in full swing. I love reading Hillary Alexander for the Telegraph’s poetic reports at the end of each day. Here are some of my favourites so far:

On Armani:
“… lean sheath dresses in smouldering fabrics that show like liquid mercury”

Armani Privé

On Dior:
Galliano echoed the calligraphic brushstrokes of Gruau in slivers of embroidery and beading, and the fluidity of illustrative line in voluminous ballgowns, which rose and fell around the body in a series of waves.

Galliano for Dior

On Givenchy:
“…intricate embroideries in hundreds and thousands of sequins, finely-cut leather, and padded silk which replicated the plumage of a crane…and hand-painted, long-silk tulle skirts, which waved like strands of bamboo in the gentle evening breeze.”

And why the only crystal balls we ever look into should come on couture gowns…

Two years ago I went to see a popular astrologer (I waited 8 months for an appointment). He read my birth chart and told me a little about my future.  He spoke for almost an hour but only two things stuck: I’d be famous in my fifties; and according to planetary alignments, I’d meet my husband in January 2011. It’s January 26th. I’m still single. I’m not sure what that says about my chances of fame at 50.

For two years every romantic disappointment, hit and miss and no-show has been compensated with an “oh-well it wouldn’t have worked anyway, he’s not January’s man”.  There are five days left till February and na-da, not even a recycled blast from the past. The predictions two-year placebo effect has worn off leaving me wallowing in an unprescribed present. What to do with the disappointment? Go on a retail rampage of course. Leopard Print pumps from Coast and Koi, a Dondup tuxedo jacket and a pair of butter-soft brogues ordered from an English stylist-friend coming to town on a shoot have been my preferred penicillin.

I’m thinking of sending the astrologer the bills – even as I do a mental recall of the session: What did he say about finance and fortune in February…
