Colouring hair with shades across the spectrum – from pastels to bold brights – is huge this summer. If you’re not ready for permanent colour, heed beauty assistant Janice Grant’s advice about chalking:

‘Hair chalking is not a new trend and has been around since the ’70s but is making a fast and furious comeback – especially at the Prada and Jean Paul Gaultier autumn/winter 2012-2013 shows. These days, everyone wants to get in on this new hair trend – including celebrities like Katy Perry, Kelly Osbourne and a host of others.’

How does it work?

‘There are two ways of doing this. You can either commit and go all out by asking your hairdresser for the colour you are dying to wear, or you can be a little less committed and get yourself a pack of Staedtler chalk pastels and have a new colour and style each day or at least until your next wash.’

Where can you get it done and can you do it yourself?

‘Consult a hairdresser for chalking advice; they will check if you hair is in good enough condition to go ahead. Alternatively, you can do it in the comfort of your own home with soft pastel chalk. Make sure you do not use oil-based chalk as it will stain your hair. Chalkboard chalk won’t stick to your hair.’

Here are some tips if you want do it yourself:

  1. You should ideally dampen your hair before applying the chalk.
  2. Using a curling or flat iron after chalking can help seal the colour.
  3. Blondes may have to shampoo a few times before the colour fully rinses out.
  4. Shake or brush the chalk out of your hair before you wash it. Getting chalked hair wet could stain your hair, clothes, face and hands.
  5. Protect your clothes and hands. Wear gloves and a towel to keep chalk from getting on you while you’re applying it. Chalk can flake off while it’s in your hair, so it’s a good idea not to wear light-coloured clothes.
  6. Opt for brighter colours – red, blue, green, orange, pink and purple are most effective on both light and dark hair.

Buy: Staedtler Pastel Chalks are available in boxes of 12, 24, 36 and 48 pieces, incorporating a wide variety of colours.
