Last weekend, our Jo’burg girl, Cheska Liackman, and her fiancé headed out of the bustling city. Destination: De Hoek Country House in Magaliesburg. It was everything she expected and then some:

I was so excited to get out of Jo’burg for the night. Usually I don’t like going away for just one night because of all the driving but De Hoek is only an hour from the city, which is perfect.

We arrived late Saturday afternoon and the sandstone buildings looked beautiful in the late afternoon sun. We began relaxing as we walked up the steps before we’d even entered the building!

A couple’s spa treatment (booking required) is a must. We had the Earth Package that includes an hour-long massage followed by a 30-minute Indian head massage. Because it was so cold we had our treatment in the luxurious upstairs room overlooking the countryside but in warmer weather you can have it in the garden.

Although I hear De Hoek is beautiful in the summer I was very pleased that we decided to go in winter. The large fireplaces are cosy and homely, and the soft toy dog on the bed also helped to make it feel like home.

I loved soaking in a hot bath in the huge tub while enjoying a view of the countryside. Before dinner we played board games by the fire while sipping on sherry. (Now doesn’t that sound like the ideal pre-dinner entertainment?)

And then came dinner! After the delicious five-course meal, we now know why De Hoek is loved for its excellent cuisine and personal service. The cutlery is silver, the glasses crystal and the owner/chef, Michael Holenstein, Swiss-trained!

It’s not the most budget-friendly, but well worth it and I cannot wait to go back.
