As the newly announced presenter of the hotly anticipated show, Project Runway South Africa, Lerato Kganyago reveals herself to be carefree, body-positive and a woman unafraid to speak out.
What is your favourite thing to do when you are not working?
I love having gatherings for my friends and family, hosting them in my home. If I don’t want to be around people, I enjoy some alone time. I am falling in love with reading again. I love Credo Mutwa’s writing and recently finished Pumla Gqola’s Rape: A South African Nightmare.
Are you the dating app kind?
I am not into dating apps at all. I am an old-school girl when it comes to love. I currently have a partner, and we met through friends. He came at the right time in my life. He is grounded, with a rich heart and mind. I love intelligent men.
How has your personal style evolved?
Oh, wow! Over the years, it has changed a lot. I think a lot of people have never understood me fashion-wise because I never put myself or my style into a box. I remember when I started wearing suits to awards ceremonies; I got a lot of backlash. I am comfortable with suits because they make me feel powerful. Fashion is about being able to express yourself without any boundaries.
Who are your style icons?
Victoria Beckham and Rihanna.
Heels or sneakers?
Vintage or new?
What is the first thing you do when you get home?
Remove the mask – but I don’t wear make-up every day. I have good skin (thank you, Mom, for these genes!), and I use things as simple as Johnson & Johnson Wet Wipes. Then I tone and moisturise with basic products.
Where do you keep your Safta award?
Right next to my TV, where I can see it and be reminded to always up my game.
The one song that’s forever on repeat?
BANKS’ Warm Water
