We are so excited about our eight super-talented Rising Star Design Award in association with Mr Price finalists and their amazing talent this year! Here, we get to know Cape Town College of Fashion Design graduate and one of this year’s finalists, Julia M’Poko:

Julia

I can’t start the day without…. a prayer and a little quiet time

You are currently obsessed with?
Anything to do with food and travel! There is an entire world out there for us to explore and I can’t wait to travel to different countries that are rich in culture.

One thing we need to know about you as a designer?
I absolutely love eveningwear so there’s always an element of it in my work.

‘My debut collection, Julienne, is a reflection of my heritage, background and stories from the fishing village in the Congo where my father comes from, Boyeka. I wanted to introduce a different kind of “African print” by drawing inspiration from the beauty and simplicity of the village. With embroidery being a key detail of many Western and Central African traditional attire, the collection uses it together with beading on feminine, polished silhouettes.’

If you could dress any celeb for a red carpet event, who would it be?

Zoe Saldana and Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles

My first memory of fashion is…
Sitting in my grandmother and aunts’ studio watching them work on beautiful wedding dresses. I was always so fascinated with how everything came together in the end as well as how amazing and intricately detailed each garment was.

My own style is…
Very relaxed with edgy and urban elements, and a touch of glam for the days where I feel like looking fabulous.

If your collection had to have a theme song, what would it be?
The instrumentals that Felder Felder used for their spring/summer 2012 collection at Somerset House. Love that track!

Name one designer you would most like to meet?
My fashion hero, Karl Lagerfeld!

Name five celebs (dead or alive) you would most like to dine with?
Oh this one is easy… Audrey Hepburn, Catherine Heigl, Steve Jobs, Lenny Kravitz and Brigitte Bardot.

Brigitte-Bardot

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been give?
There is nothing in this world that is impossible and out of your reach, have faith even when you cannot see the end result.

Name one thing about yourself that we don’t know!
If I hadn’t gone into fashion I would have done performing arts.
