We follow MAC makeup artist Michelle-Lee Collins as she travels to Italy for one of the highlight’s of the global fashion calendar: Milan Fashion Week. Between coffees, the catwalk and 4 am wake-up calls, she takes the time to give us a glimpse backstage at one of the biggest international fashion events.

4:00am

The alarm screeches: it’s time to rise and paint some faces at the Sportmax show. Quick shower to wake up, and then I grab my kit. Freshly washed brushes, MAC arm band and towel – check! Flash coffee, power through a banana, chug a Berocca and I am off to catch the MAC bus.

5:30am

The elevator opens in the lobby to a crowd of black-clad MACcies, half-asleep and downing coffees to wake up. Giorgio, our Italian bus driver, greets us with the hugest smile and a very energetic “ciao”, as he loads our kits onto the bus. The drive to the venue is fairly quiet as we all work to find our personalities for such an early call.

milan4

6:00am

The bus pulls up around the corner from the venue, we grab our zukas (the super snazzy MAC kit) and, like an army of makeup warriors, take over the sidewalks – always quite a sight to witness. We enter the backstage area and it’s buzzing already; hair dryers are going, the show music is playing, and the energy is contagious. As I turn the corner, I spot Diane Kendal – the makeup key for the show today. Diane greets us all with the warmest smile and introduces herself to each and every one of us individually. Meeting with this backstage master, one of the best in class, never gets old, and it takes a second for everything to sink in.

6:15am

The makeup demo begins: Diane pretty much flies through, telling us that the inspiration is “gorgeous sporty beauties”. The sporty skin seems to make its way back most summer seasons. Spring/Summer in Milano is always minimal and subtly finessed, and this show is no different, characterized by a hint of burgundy from the S/S Trend Forecast Palette washed through the crease, the new Pro Gloss patted onto the lid, invisible perfecting on the skin and voila – gorgeous sporty beauties ready to hit the runway.

milan7

6:45am

We pack out our stations strategically, and then wait for the models to stream in. I am on “face chart duty” on this show. I pull out my face charting bag of tricks – pens, pencil crayons, tipex – and dive into creating the chart for the New York-based online team who will post the chart and “how to” by the end of the day. I complete the chart and write up, and then have it approved by Romero Jennings, Director of Makeup Artistry in NY. He puts his million dollar signature on the back, we pose for a quick selfie and I am ready to dive into a ‘makeup’.

milan10

7:00am

My first model arrives, we do the introductions and I get started, prepping her skin to maximize moisture and vitality as most of the models have been going from city to city – NY, London, Milan – so they are exhausted and their complexions need just a tad of TLC. After a generous face massage I hear a slight purring, and look down to find my model fast asleep with her face in my hands. Milano is crazily busy for the models, with late night fittings and early morning calls, and not as glamorous as one would imagine. Three models down and a thumbs up from Diane on all three of my ‘makeup’s’. I am chuffed. I get my backstage bag ready for line up and decide it’s time to make my way over to the coffee station.

milan11

9:00am

Its line up time… You have to love Italy for the high energy, the backstage managers are yelling in all languages for the models to be released from hair, makeup and nails and to get dressed and line up. I take a picture of my last model, grab my backstage bag and run over to the line up area. The backstage area is always frantic with photographers, dressers, stylists, hair and makeup – here are people everywhere. My aim in the backstage chaos is to stay busy and out of the way as best as I possibly can. Crawling on the ground, moisturizing legs and giving them a once over for any scars, imperfections or red knees ensuring top to toe perfection – this is the task in lineup. The music starts, and the backstage area goes silent for just half a second, before one of the photographers starts yelling for someone to get out of his shot. It’s always crazy, models doing the hundred meter dash from the runway to dresser to change into their next garment. Fun times!

milan9

9:45am

The show wraps, with Diane giving me the nod of validation for my contribution to the line up. I skip off to my workstation and pack up my kit. All the other artists are heading off to Etro, so I will have to grab a cab solo. This seems like a simple task but not in Italy, and not with my very limited “Italiano”.

10:00am

I step outside of the backstage area into the bustling streets of photogs and fashionistas. There are photographers running wild trying to snap all the incredible personas that accessories the streets after these shows. I navigate towards the front of the venue and attempt to call a cab. The conversation starts the same each time, “Bonjourno…followed by a sheepish do you speak English?’ this is normally followed by one of two outcomes – the phone is hung up or I am pleasantly surprised by a “yes” in an amused voice. This particular day, I called 4 times before I am successful. The cab ordered, it is time find the cab that is yours amongst the swarm of people trying to hail a cab. Twenty minutes later I am in my cab and en route to the Corsa Coma for a makeup test for Mila Schon.

10:30am

It’s time to grab some grub before I dive into the second part of my day. I find this quaint bakery and sit under an umbrella as it starts to drizzle. All the Italian conversations around me play as the backing track to my morning. I take this moment to check my emails for any changes to my show schedule from Aimee Frost, the ring master of MACcies at International Collections.

milan2

11:15am

I arrive at the studio of Mila Schon and silently say a prayer for an elevator. I ask a few people around me for assistance but without any luck, so I attempt to navigate the stairs with my 25kg kit. Finally I make it to the top of the stairs, where I am met with a huge ping, and a door opens, emitting two models, who, yes, had taken the elevator up, while I labored up the stairs. I am early, so I introduce myself to the designer and his team, and then perch out of the way whilst I wait for Sam Bryant, makeup extraordinaire, to arrive.

11:45am

Sam and her assistant arrive. They have just landed from London to key this show. Sam is optimistic about creating the look for this show. She wants to create “beautiful little aliens” she says all mischievously. I wait for her assistant to pack out her station, and then lay out some of the new or yet-to-launch MAC product for Sam to draw inspiration from and use on the show. I then grab my note book and hang back. I spot the hair team so make my way over to say “Hi”. The key hair stylist, Peter Gray, is from Zimbabwe and went to school in Pretoria so we connect easily. I take a moment to watch them create some amazing hair master pieces while Sam gets ready to start doing makeup.

milan8

12:15pm

A charming Italian lady walks around offering espressos, I really shouldn’t have another coffee but when in Milano, you drink espresso, right?

13:00pm

The showroom is buzzing with models who are casting for the show. The designer, Sam and Peter, are staring intensely at the test model that is now in a garment, to asses if they have nailed the mood of the collection. A few “umms”, chin rubs and eye squints later, Sam runs into the makeup room and starts cutting out white circles. Her assistant and I jump in. She looks over at me and laughs, “brain wave,” she says, “lets create ear cuffs with these stickers”.

milan5

13:15pm

Makeup is approved. The hair team isn’t quite there yet, so they continue to test out new ideas.

Sam and I sit on the floor with some sandwiches and take stock of the product list to ensure I know exactly what we are using and what product I need to collect from the MAC store. The list is written and checked, and for the next 45 minutes we just sit on the floor talking about makeup, Africa and Sam’s travels to Cape Town. I am in heaven.

milan6

14:00pm

Time to get myself back to the hotel, but not before yet another cab-hailing experience. I decide to risk falling on the cobbles with my signature wedges and have a quick wonder around, peeking into the amazing couture shops that line the Corsa Coma. My window shopping leads me directly towards a taxi holding area – score! “Una hotel Cusani per favore!” At least I have that phrase down.

milanbuild

14:30pm

At this point, I am feeling slightly tired. I drop off my kit in my room quickly, ensuring that I make minimal eye contact with the bed, throw on some walking shoes, and head off to the MAC Pro Store to do a “product pick-up” for the two shows next morning. The store is heaving, just like the streets. Milano comes alive during fashion week, so I decide, post product pick-up, that I am going to find a good lunch location and do a spot of people-watching while I catch up on my emails.

16:00pm

Proseco time. The lobby bar is the hangout for all the MACcies post shows. It is Senior Artist catch up time. It’s not very often we are able to spend time like this laughing and picking each other’s creative brains about all things that influence our MAC lives.

milanback

18:00pm

Time to connect with my loves at home via Face Time. These moments make traveling so much lighter. I take a quick shower and change before dinner.

19:30pm

Dinner time with a table of Senior Artists: It’s a situation of crazy stories from that day’s shows, and hysterical laughter about everything and anything, all topped off with an incredibly delicious pasta and red wine, belissimo!

milan3

10:00pm

I’m back at the hotel now, and so quickly organize my kit and give my brushes a thorough wash.

10:30pm

Finally, I crawl into bed, set a minimum of 2 alarms, and call reception requesting a wake-up call the next morning: another 4am wake up awaits me.

I drift off thinking about bumping into Anna Wintour at the Fausto Puglisi show the day before… it is a surreal moment to fall asleep to.

Paris Fashion Week never disappoints, and this year’s event was no exception. From Chloe’s ease to Kenzo’s bold athletic aesthetic, the highlight shows were a feast for the eyes. We bring you Tarryn Oppel’s top picks for the best of PFW 2014.

Chloé

CHLOE1

CHLOE2

CHLOE3

Clare Waight Keller most certainly had simplicity and ease in mind when she designed this collection for Chloé. At first glance, as cheesecloth dresses with lace detailing emerged on the runway, one would have immediately thought that this was going to be a mash-up of boho/hippie and Grecian goddess. But, as more looks came out, the sight of raw and washed denim, buttery soft suede and clean, chic lines with stripped back styling and very pretty hair had us head over heels in no time.

Celine

CELINE1

CELINE2

CELINE3

CELINE4

Going from the last SS collection by Pheobe Philo, where we saw an explosion of colour and paint brush strokes (that we couldn’t get enough of), this collection was a contrast and an undoubted breath of fresh air. The key word here is “womanhood”: all of the pieces reflected a sense of power (the soundtrack was This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush which set the sensual, yet strong tone for the show). From the structure of T-shaped tops and rectangle jackets, to woollen textures that moved as the models walked down the runway, and functional flats, man, we’re pretty pleased to be women!

Stella McCartney

stella1

stella2

stella3

Stella set out to create seriously voluminous pieces, that’s for sure. From cut-out suede, slinky knits, printed and denim jumpsuits (spotted a few times on the Paris runways), and mirrored prints that were fresh and new, this collection created volume. The effortlessness, fluidity and considered editing of the collection made it a stand out, and we particularly love the knotted sandals.

Kenzo

KENZO1

KENZO2

KENZO3

KENZO4

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim know a silhouette that will make a statement. We’re not kidding when we say that pants were enormous and extra roomy. What also stood out for us was the attention to detail: from the way that fabrics fell, to the Kenzo letters all laser-cut out of rubberized fabrics and broderie anglaise. There was a sense of almost-athletic influence in the additions of wrap-around sunglasses, track tops and neoprene, as well as side-slit knitted vests, while the pale blue denim pieces got our thumbs up.

Dries Van Noten

DRIES1

DRIES2

DRIES3

dries6

The chubby, plush carpet runway reminded us of a life in the seventies. This theme was also reflected in the prints, colours and relaxed silhouettes. Between the white, washed denim and simple separates in Paris, it was exciting to see layering, mixed patterns and some sheen in the form of colourful metallic, foiling and jacquard. Although the autumn colour palette may have, for some, created a dull atmosphere, we can’t help but love the coherent thread of brilliant design and impeccable styling – everything just worked.

Dior

DIOR1

DIOR2

DIOR3

Just when we thought we couldn’t take another roomy-sleeved dress, Dior happened. Raf Simmons, however, won our hearts over with the styling. Pretty full skirts were paired with simple white vests, side-slit tube dresses with peek-a-boo turtle necks. Simmons also introduced innovative, delicately hand-knitted shoes! It tied everything together with an almost folky feel (in a good way) – all in the detail.

Milan has come and gone, Paris is in full swing. The ELLE beauty team take a look at this year’s favourite beauty trends from both MFW and PFW 2014.

1.    Drawing the Line

MFW-LINER

From the graphic line seen at Max Mara to the classic feline flick at Dolce & Gabbana, the liner emerged in all different shapes and sizes.

2.    The Best Part

MFW-BEAUTY-

Cavalli showed off a simple, sleek side part that echoes the schoolgirl hair trend that has been on our radar lately. Moschino took a softer approach for a more mature, old Hollywood look.

3. Side-Whiskers

MFW-MARNI-SPRING

Prada and Marni took a few tips from the boys this year and added a masculine touch to their pretty runway faces. The key to this look is keeping your locks is keeping you locks softened with hair oil.

4.    Slick Chick

MFW-SLICK-CHIC

The sleek, wet look was central to shows like Vionnet, Balenciaga and Balmain. Vionnet took the high road with top ponies, while Balenciaga and Balmain opted for the low, classic look.

5.    Shadow Softies

MFW-1

Gone are the days of the dark, smokey eye: Paris Fashion Week saw a soft twist on the makeup fav, replacing blacks and greys for pinks and purples.

6.    Golden Girls

MFW-GOLDEN

Alexis Mabille chose golds and bronzes to complement her chic line, proving that shine and shimmer is here to stay. Paired with a metallic eye, these bronzed beauties were glowing at the fore of PFW.

All you creatures of the night, listen up: MAC has done it again, and with the sweet-transvestite fad re-emerging, their collection will have you looking campy and vampy and ready to take on the Time Warp – we are transfixed!

RockyHorror-Beauty-300
The Rocky Horror Picture Show has taken SA by storm ever since Richard O’Brien’s production of the film hit theaters. And, with men and women channeling their inner Transsexual Transylvanian in outstanding costumes and makeup, its no wonder we’re all still transfixed. Following on the film’s cult status, it only seems fitting that the film – and live production – should collaborate with a cult makeup brand like MAC.

RockyHorror-Ambient-300

This Midnight Madness makeup collection is inspired by the weird, quirky, delightful characters from the film and show: from its eye shadow in Riff Raff to lipstick in Frank-N-Furter. The creative vision behind this breakout line of wild and sexy colours, James Gager, says that “The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a cult classic about transformation, diversity, individuality and fantasy; all elements that are a part of MAC’s DNA”.

The collection will have 21 items and will be on shelves on 6 October – just in time for Halloween – and we can’t wait to mimic our favourite TRHPS characters with this fun and fierce makeup.

Who is your favourite character from the film? Let us know by leaving a comment below or tweet us @ElleMagazineSA #MACRockyHorror

Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin, the creative genius behind Armani Privé’s latest luxurious creation Ombre & Lumière, shares his scent secrets.

armani

What was the inspiration for Ombre & Lumière?

My first idea was to create an easy and contrasted fragrance. I wanted to build a play of light and shadow through a direct olfactory imprint. I played with raw materials: Jasmine Sambac Absolute laced with Paradisone® brought the luminous, airy and floral facets; Orris Absolute and Ambrox counterbalanced the Jasmine and conferred intensity, deepness and density to the note.

Describe the fragrance in three words

Feminine, sensual and mysterious.

How long did it take to make Ombre & Lumière? Which elements were the most challenging?

The creation of Ombre & Lumière took me an entire year. The most difficult part during the creation process was to find the perfect balance in the contrast of the raw materials while making the fragrance harmonious.

It’s not your first time working for Armani – what differentiates this brand from others?

Armani is different from other brands in that it has a particular focus dedicated to creativity. It is very enjoyable and refreshing working with open briefs [from a client], sans specific constraints.

Which woman were you envisioning when creating the perfume?

I was thinking of a sensual, voluptuous, stellar and radiant Italian woman such as Monica Bellucci.

monica-bellucci

If this perfume had to be a dish, what would it be?

If Ombre & Lumière had to be a dish, it would surely be an Italian one – a simple and tasty recipe. A contrasted dish using high quality ingredients, which are harmoniously balanced, allowing you to taste each of those individually while enjoying their fine fusion overall.

Grasse on the French Riviera is known as the capital of perfumery. What is it about your hometown that attracts so many perfumers?

Many perfumers come from Grasse. It is the home of perfumery. Most of the perfumers go there to experience the fragrance culture and traditions. I have been lucky having been raised there and I still live between Grasse and Paris today.

What does perfume mean to you?

For me, a fragrance is a weapon of seduction. It must be recognisable long before a woman starts to talk.

What is your biggest tip to women when choosing a fragrance?

Picking your perfume is, in some ways, revealing part of your personality. This explains why it is so difficult. My advice would be to choose a fragrance that you love. A perfume that you feel dresses you like a beautiful garment would.

Facts about Ombre & Lumière

Top notes: Bergamot orange, freesia

Centre notes: Iris, Jasmine

Base notes: musk, ambroxan

Bottles produced: 1 000 (extremely exclusive)

Bottles in Africa: 3

Packaging: individually handcrafted

A couple of weeks ago we told you about the new scent, MYNY by Donna Karan New York. A fruity, floral fragrance that celebrates the city and the women who live there. Over the next five weeks we’ll be talking to up-and-coming female photographers, asking them to #BeAPartOfIt and to share their visual, urban stories illustrating what puts their city on the world class creative map.

Next up? Amy Scheepers

I find that living in a city like Cape Town affects your way of dressing in so many ways. The biggest way, in my opinion, is how inspired you always are by the people around you, the city’s beautiful architecture, busy schedules, and general creativity. How can you not take it all in and come out with a sense of style that is uniquely you? I photographed 5 women who not only have very distinct and different styles, but are also all amazing creatives and inspiring people. To go alongside their image I deconstructed their outfits into a few key pieces and ‘dressed the city’.

Tell us about you?

I’m interested in the business of creating. I’m a full-time photographer and blogger at the moment, and I thoroughly enjoy a good cup of tea. I’m rather in love with Cape Town.

Your style is….

Constantly changing.

What was the concept behind the shoot?

I wanted to shoot 5 women from Cape Town with distinct styles in different creative professions; women doing inspiring things in their fields. Alongside their images I wanted to shoot elements of their outfits in a conceptual layout.

What makes CT South Africa’s answer to New York?

The energy. Cape Town has such a vibrant energy, everyone’s always on the go and there’s always something happening.

Rita Ora is….

Vibrant.

How did you choose your locations?

All of the images were shot in town. I wanted to use locations that would be recognizable to people living in Cape Town, as well as ones used on a daily basis.

On what basis did you choose your models?

I chose these women for their distinctive personal style as well as for what they are doing within their creative line of work. The subjects are Raya Rossi, Gabrielle Kannemeyer, Kyla Jade Rorke, Jess van Wyk and Kate Desmarais.

Which is you favourite shot?

Each image has something special about it, probably because I remember the scenario in which it was taken. I love Kate’s little laugh and I really like that Gabrielle isn’t looking at the camera.

Who are 3 photographers who inspire you?

There are too many, but off the top of my head – Camilla Akrans for her whimsical style, Tim Walker for having the most remarkable imagination, and Marie Zucker for her fresh approach.

What are your 3 trends for summer street style?

Sliders, hats and smiles

His fantastical collection, Insecta Mirabilis, was much lauded by the public, attracting the attention of AltaRoma President, Silvia Venturini Fendi, who praised the young South African’s work, and urged him to return to future festivals.

ELLE sat down with Hendrik to talk international exposure, inspiration, and Insecta Mirabilis.

1. Alta Roma is a celebration of the old and the new, showcasing new designers while also celebrating established Italian names. What did it feel like to debut among Italian heavyweights?

Our presentation was part of AltaRoma, during a show entitled “World of Fashion”, which meant that we shared the ramp with other fellow couturiers from around the world, but still had the support of a structure for a first showcase in Rome.  As a “young” South African brand, we  felt really good to have the opportunity to showcase at the mythical AltaRoma amongst the “ heavyweights” and to be acclaimed by the media and the public. However, all our focus was on delivering a successful presentation and we were less concerned with the other participants.

2. A distinctive trait of Roman Couture is neocoture – the blending of old and new; vintage and innovative design. How do you see your work fitting in within neocoture?

Our style fits that bill quite well; we are making a point in delivering outstanding results according to “state of the art” methods while adding the latest technologies to our designs. The result is a timeless elegance with a twist!

3. Tell us a bit about the inspiration for Insecta Mirabilis – the Couture Collection you presented at the biannual Rome Fashion Week?

Our collection draws its inspiration from the arguable beauty of insects. The collection underlines the unique characteristics of insects, specifically their body morphological uniqueness, and directs the attention to the mesmerizing beauty found in these at first “repulsive” or “angst inducing” creatures. We made a point in choosing insects that are not particularly attractive; like the tarantula, the dragonfly, the moth, and so forth instead of falling for the incredible beauty of butterflies.

4. Texture plays a huge role in your collection – with mohair, feathers, wool and 13 different kinds of silk! Why is this such an important element in your designs?

Well, the art of couture requires the ability for the couturier to mix different fibers and textures on one garment, and to propose interesting and sometimes unique processes to his clientele. AltaRoma, as well as Paris Fashion Week, has strict requirements when it comes to textured fabrics used as components to couture garments, and these requirements are met by our company while still beading, embroidering and appliqué our own fabrics in-house, unlike the fashion and clothing industry which both use already textured fabrics from Asian countries.

5. Ansia Jonck Jewellery designed custom earrings for each of your garments. What are your tips for accessorizing couture outfits?

When it comes to accessories,  our motto is often “less is more”. Having said so, if you happen to wear a cute little round neck pencil dress in black silk “à la Jackie O.”; feel free to overload your look with long “sautoir” of Tahitian pearls or with this special “ethno boho” Proudly South African necklace in bright colours. Basically, if the dress is plain, there is more room to accessorise, but if your garment is already a statement, then a pair of custom made earrings and perhaps a chunky bracelet should do the trick; and remember that elegance is never a “faux-pas”!

6. AltaRoma President, Silvia Venturini Fendi, said that she wants to see you at future events. What does this recognition mean to you as a designer?

For me, as well as for my brand; it means that the collection presented at AltaRoma in July was at the level of quality and originality expected by one of the most respected and demanding fashion institutions in the world. It also means that all my efforts to develop a proper “Couture House” in South Africa is starting to pay off, thanks to our discerning clientele honouring us with their faithful patronage year after year.

7. With the new season comes a new collection. Your Spring line is called “Reflections”, and features a lot of different prints. What are your tips for wearing pieces from Reflections?

Indeed, our new S/S’15 “Simply Vermeulen” prêt-à-porter collection is entitled “Reflections” and is mainly composed of printed silks. The cocktail dresses are quite versatile and can be worn in many ways as some bloggers have proposed on their blogs: with a jacket and flats for the office during the day, a quick swap of flats for stilettos at cocktail hour, or with high heels and jewellery to dance the night away! It has even been proposed with high boots and little faux-fur bolero to enjoy your favourite dresses after the summer is gone!

8. Can we incorporate haute couture into our everyday wardrobes?

Absolutely! Masterpieces become collectors items. Have one or two pieces of well-fitted couture in your wardrobe; it can be a Chanel-type wool jacket with embroidery that you will mix and match to your liking, or that particular pair of high-waist silk trousers that are so well fitted to your body that they always maks you ooze confidence. It is an investment worth making.

9.What does the future hold for South African designers? Who is on your radar?

It is hard to say; we are following our own path that leads to Europe and the USA, we have therefore difficulty in assessing what other SA designers are up to. On our radar at the moment? Keep an eye on Suzaan Heyns.
