Big-LoveIn our October issue of ELLE, we asked: ‘What is the most extreme thing you’ve ever done for the love of fashion?’ Turn to page 62 to find out what industry insiders, It-girls and ELLE’s Belles confessed to. As promised, we share a few more stories here from ELLE’s interns.

Araffa Mpungwe, fashion intern:

‘I’d say I’m the bravest of all my siblings. Give me a challenge, and I’ll deliver 100 percent. All the more enticing if a reward is offered. It was a lovely Sunday evening and the family gathered in laughter and love, while eating delicious crispy chicken. My sweet dad dared me to eat not one, but two spoons of Chinese chilli – for a R1 000. Of course, with an east African tongue, this seemed easy. No, no, no! R1 000 later, I was huffing and puffing, swearing left right and centre, my eyes were blood red and it felt like hell’s kitchen in my mouth! I wouldn’t say it was worth it, but my new shoes look fantastic on me!’

Holly Hermon, fashion intern:

‘When I was about 16, I used to straighten my hair with an iron and ironing board – with the help of my best friend.  It probably would have been a better idea to buy a hair-straightner but there is nothing that straightens hair as well as a red-hot iron! And that’s not the only wild thing I’ve done for the love of fashion and beauty. When I was studying fashion design at FEDISA, I decided to use crinoline as the basic structure for my first-year-final dress. I ended up having to tie the crinoline to my chandelier, and hand-sewed 250 bunches of tulle to the outside. My fingers were bleeding by the end of it, but it was all worth it as I got into the fashion show.’

Unathi Mbele, online intern:

‘My best friend and I went to Europe for our first-ever non-parent-supervised trip, and our first stop was London. Being totally ignorant, or rather dismissive about the weakness of the rand, we decided to catch the tube and head on down to Oxford Street, Knightsbridge and Piccadilly. There, we lost all notion of spending wisely and raided Topshop, H&M, Zara…

To cut a long story short, that night, we also paid a hefty £50 for a lavish dinner outside Harrods. To make matters worse, we still had the whole of Europe waiting for us to explore, eat, shop and party in. Top tip? Never spend your travel budget on the first day. Actually, on second thought, why not do it for the love of fashion!’

Now, it’s your turn! Tell us what is the most extreme thing you have ever done for the love of fashion by commenting below. Go on, do it, we love hearing from you!
