The past weekend ELLE fashion editor Asanda Sizani attended Africa Fashion Week in Jo’burg. Here are her highlights:

Klûk CGDT

‘This show was indulgent with the luxury we’ve come to know them for. As always, the Klûk CGDT collection had a touch of whimsy and personality, and it was playful and indulgent yet very sophisticated. They showed elegant sheer layering, sequins and painterly florals on silk dresses and skirts. It was an opulent, feminine collection. One of my many favourites was a sheer buttercup yellow gown with appliqué detail along the hemline.’

Marianne Fassler

‘Her show was original. Black laser-cut dresses featured among vibrant multi-layered tulle, knitwear and, of course, her signature leopard-print updated with clashing polka dots, which Lola Faturoti also explored. Marianne is always distinctly African with a playful modern edge that makes it easy for many to covet her pieces.’

Alexander Koutny

‘New York-based and Jo’burg-born Alexander Koutny wanted mostly black girls in his show as, he says, his collection is about a modern Africa with an all-black collection with tactile combinations such as brushed wool and fine linen, Each piece cost no less than $1 000 to produce and all items were hand-made by Alexander and his studio assistant, Lucy Falck.’

LaQuan Smith

‘Neoprene with exposed zips and futuristic shapes – LaQuan showed his signature pieces with more softly tailored pieces in between. With the sporty aesthetic being quite evident for summer 2012, the pieces in this range are ahead of the seasons.’

David Tlale

‘AFW was closed with the much anticipated by-invite-only David Tlale show at the South African Mint. With money as its inspiration, coin-embellished dresses provided the bling while bright, softly draped citrus fabrics spoke of a feminine summer and provided a play on texture. It was a futuristic but mostly wearable collection.’

Spotted off the runways

Of course, the ELLE team looked fabulous: Poppy Evans, Cheska Liackman and Asanda Sizani
