Our very own Themba Mbuyisa exhibits at the 32d International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères, South of France.
The annual International Festival of Fashion and Photography held in the small town of Hyères in the South of France is without a doubt one of the most covetable platforms for emerging design and photographic talent.
And this year, the festival’s 32nd year, is extra special for us here at ELLE. We are so proud to announce that 2016 ELLE Style Reporter, über talented photographer Themba Mbuyisa, was selected out of entrants from all over the world as one of ten finalists to exhibit at the festival. He also stands a chance to win the Grand Prize of 15 000 euros presented by the festival’s main sponsor, Chanel. In addition, photographers might win a three-week residency in Beirut, Lebanon, sponsored by Elie Saab. Last but not least, there is also a prize of 5 000 euros from retailer American Vintage, which comes with a 10 000 euros photography budget to create a project with the retailer.
The festival is held annually at the Villa Noailles – a landmark cubist villa built in the 1920’s by Mallet-Stevens in the centre of town. Alongside the photographers, the festival also showcases ten young fashion designers. In the past, it has revealed to the world talents such as Viktor & Rolf, Xuly Bët, Sølve Sunsbø, Romain Kremer (Mugler men), Felipe Oliveira Baptista (Lacoste), Jean-Paul Lespagnard, Cedric Buchet and many, many more.
The ten young fashion designers and ten young photographers are selected as contestants by a jury of international professionals. Designers that have taken part in the festival as members of the jury include Azzedine Alaïa, John Galliano, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Sui, Phillip Treacy, Hussein Chalayan, Ann Demeulemeester, Raf Simons, and the list goes on.
Only a few will relate to this, especially in the profession I'm in… but to be a kid from Soweto, Johannesburg and be able to travel internationally because of your work means reaching new heights from my view. I'm the first African artist to be selected as a finalist in the Villa Noailles fashion and photography festival. @villanoailles Don't forget that this is one of the most celebrated, prestigious art festivals in Europe! Whatever the outcomes here, whether I win the prize or not, I know that I've already done the unexpected and a lot is yet to come. I'm not even 25 years old yet, (just saying) #photography #thembambuyisa #villanoailles #hyeres #france #fashion #creative
This year, the fashion and photography juries will be headed up respectively by Bertrand Guyon, style director at the legendary Haute Couture house, Schiaparelli, and award-winning British photographer Tim Walker, whose work is part of the Victoria & Albert Museum’s permanent collection.
ELLE digital editor Malibongwe Tyilo, with the support of Air France, will be joining Themba in Hyères at the Villa Noailles.
Join us in in wishing Themba all of the very best and keep your eyes locked on our Instagram stories and Twitter feed for all of the action!
